I'm Susan Yackee from the VOA News Center in Washington.

Former Indonesian President Suharto has died after battling heart, lung and kidney problems for more than 20 days in the Jarkada Hospital. Chad Bouchard reports from the Indonesian capital.

The 86-year-old former dictator was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on January 4th. His doctor say he suffered multiple organ failure and slipped into a coma Sunday before passing away. Major Dicky Sondani, the police chief for the district where the hospital is located, annouced the news. He says Indonesia's second President Haji Mohammed Suharto passed away at about 10 minutes after 1 pm local time. Former Preisdent Suharto's 32-year rule saw economic growth and stability for Indonesia but widespread human rights abuses and corruption as well. He stepped down in 1998 during the Asian economic crisis and mass protests demanding his resignation. Chad Bouchard for VOA news, Jakarda.

Former UN Chief Kofi Annan met today with Kenya's opposition party leader Raila Odinga, hours after more ethnic violence in the Rift Vally left at least 17 people dead. Mr.Annan said after visiting the Rift region Saturday, the president Mwai Kibaki's disputed election had resulted in gross and systematic human rights abuses. Scores of people have been killed in the region since fighting broke out there Thursday. The tribal fighters are attacking each other with bows and arrows and machetes. Some victims have been burnt to death. The fighting (这里可能是口误) erupted after last month's presidential election putting President Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe against Mr. Odinga's Luo tribe and the Kalejin clan. The death toll across Kenya is at least 750.

A new study of the African Union's operation says the organization is plagued by waste corruption, weak leadership and an unhealthy culture. African Union leaders asked for the study last July and named a high-level panel to conduct it. The copy of the panel's report obtained by VOA is scalingly critical of the AU's top leadership. It describes the relationship between AU commission chairman Alpha Oumar Konare and other commisioners as disfunctional. The panel found serious flaws in the operation of several AU bodies and said the management of financial resources needs a complete overhaul.

Senator Barack Obama won the South Carolina Democratic primary by a wide margin over his closest rival Senator Hillary Clinton. Former Senator John Edwards who was born in the state came in third. VOA's Greg Flakus reports on the latest in the US preisdential contest.

Obama began his quest for the presidency last year as a candidate who could transcend race. But by winning the Iowa cascuses in the midwestern state that has a very small black population, he convinced many blacks around the country that he was the first African-American with a real chance at (这里是连读现象,/s/和/æ/连读) winning the presidency. At that point, his supporters among blacks in South Carolina surged. But analysts say it will be critical for him to emphasize his appeal across racial boundaries as he enters the important Super Tuesday contest on February 5th in which 22 states will hold primaries and causcuses. Analysts also note that Hillary Clinton remains a formidable candidate in those contests and is likely to fight hard for every vote. Her appeal to women is especially strong. She is the first female presidential candidate with a real chance of becoming president. Greg Flakus, VOA News, Columbia, South Carolina.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have met to discuss the crisis on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. Ahead of today's meeting, Palestinian officials said Mr. Abbas would ask Israel to allow Palestinian Authority Forces to deploy to the border. But it is not clear if forces loyal to Mr. Abbas would be able to take control of the area now held by rival Hamas fighters. Hamas fighters blew up security fences along Egypt's border Wednesday to allow hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to buy food and other supplies. Israel had sealed its borders with Gaza nearly two weeks ago to protest rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas militants.

Pakistani security forces say they have renewed their efforts to recapture a key road tunnel in the country's North-West Frontier Province from militants. Fighting in the lawless region around the town of Darra Adam Kheil entered its third day today as Pakistani troops back by helicopter gunships targeted militants who now control the tunnel in the hills surrounding it.
