US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson acknowledged today that the US economy is experiencing a sharp downturn. He says the government is trying to avoid a wider crisis. "The focus of policymakers is on reducing the spillover into the real economy from turbulence and disruptions in our financial markets." Major stock indexes in London, Frankfort and Paris were gaining more than 2%. Benchmark indexes in Tokyo and Hong Kong closed up more than 1% today.

 

An attack near the US Embassy in Yemen has killed at least one local security guard and wounded several other security personnel as well as some children. Government officials and eyewitnesses say the blast at a girl's school in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, happened early today.
