The opposition candidate in Taiwan has easily won the island's presidential election while voters overwhelmingly rejected two referendums on Taiwan joining the United Nations. The opposition candidate Ma Ying-jeou of the Nationalist Party won the presidential race with 58% of the vote compared to 42% for Frank Hsieh of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. Fireworks lit the night sky in celebration over Taipei. Mr. Ma told supporters outside his headquarters voters had demanded change, a stronger economy and peace across the Taiwan Strait. Saturday's election included the two referendums asking whether Taiwan should pursue United Nations membership, including a plan that would have sought membership under the name "Taiwan". Both those proposals went down to defeat.

Turkish riot police fought Kurdish protestors for a second day Saturday, as Kurdish New Year celebrations deteriorated into demonstrations in favor of separatist rebels. Authorities responded by hitting demonstrators with batons and firing tear gas to disperse a crowd of about 3000 people who gathered in that city of Van. The state-run Anatolia News Agency says at least 60 people were injured including police officers and many protestors who were detained. Clashes also took place in other cities in southeastern Turkey.

President Bush used his weekly radio address Saturday to deliver an Easter message of gratitude. The president called Easter a season of renewal and encouraged Americans to reflect on the sacrifices they have made for their country. "On Easter, we hold in our hearts those who will be spending this holiday far from home -- our troops on the front lines. I deeply appreciate the sacrifices that they and their families are making. America is blessed with the world's greatest military. " President Bush also offered gratitude to Americans who helped others in need.

Sri Lankan military officials say 10 sailors are missing after a naval vessel was destroyed off the island's northeastern coast on Saturday.
