Iraqi insurgents have killed at least 18 people in separate attacks in the northern city of Mosul and the capital Baghdad. In Mosul, a suicide truck bomber smashed to the gate of an Iraqi army base earlier today and blew up the vehicle. At least 11 soldiers were killed, 40 others wounded, no immediate claim of responsibility. U. S. commanders say Mosul was the last urban stronghold of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. In Baghdad, gunmen in three cars opened fire on pedestrians killing at least 6 people and wounding about 16.

A cloud of fragrant incense is rising above the ancient stone tomb here in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, believed to be the place where Jesus rose from the dead. Priests and monks in red and white robes are chanting the Easter liturgy. The dormer above depicts a burst of golden light symbolizing the glory of the resurrection.

Meantime, Pope Benedict celebrated Easter mass today in a cold and wet St. Peter's Square. "Addressing the throng of pilgrims from the steps of the basilica overlooking St. Peter's Square, Pope Benedict explained the importance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pope Benedict said the death and resurrection of Jesus is an event of invincible love. It changed the course of history giving to human life an indestructible and renewed meaning and value. He added that Jesus Christ died and rose for all, saying he is our hope. The Pope was addressing the faithful in his "Urbi et Orbi" message for Easter, the holiest day in the Church's liturgical calendar. In his message, the Pope focused his attention on some of the world's trouble spots. He urged solutions in areas bloodied by conflict and where human dignity continues to be scorned and trampled. Taiwan's newly elected president says he will work to improve ties with Beijing as promised during his campaign, but he says he has no plans to visit China any time soon. Fireworks erupted Saturday night over the campaign headquarters of Ma Ying-jeou, a Harvard-educated lawyer and former mayor of Taipei. Ma, from the Nationalist Party, won Taiwan's presidential election with 58% of the vote. More than 41% of voters chose his opponent Frank Hsieh from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. The incumbent President Chen Shuibian is widely seen as pushing for Taiwan independence which has angered China and it's led to increased cross-strait's tension. Beijing considers the island part of the Chinese nation and it's vowed to use force if necessary to prevent it from declaring independence. Stephanie Ho, VOA News, Beijing.
