Ayman al-Zawahiri made the appeal in a recording placed on several Internet websites. He also accused Saudi, Egyptian and Jordanian leaders of working with the United States and Israel against the Palestinians in Gaza.

 

[3] The number of American service members killed in Iraq has reached 4,000. American military officials say a bomb explosion Sunday killed four American soldiers near Baghdad. Rebel launched rockets and shells are hitting the heavily secured Green Zone in central Baghdad. The war in Iraq entered its sixth year several days ago. It has reportedly cost the United States more than 400 billion dollars so far.

South Korea says nearly 500 prisoners of war are still alive in the North. North Korea says no one is being forced to stay there.

Final results of the voting are expected on Tuesday. The two main political parties have similar goals. They want to protect the country's culture and environment while seeking economic growth. The winners of the election will work with members of the upper parliament to choose a prime minister.

The United States and most European countries recognize Kosovo independence from Serbia. But Russia supports Serbia's claim to the land. Also Monday, the Serbian government proposed that Kosovo be divided according to its ethnic groups. The government says Serbs should control their own police, judges and border security.

 

[7] The newly elected presidents of Russia and Armenia have met in the Russian capital Moscow. It is the first foreign visit for Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian since he won election last month. He and Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev were expected to talk about economic and energy cooperation and security issues.
