The new photos of former First Lady Laura Bush welcoming the Obama girls into the new home, the White House. She and former president are,of course, now back in Texas in their new home in Dallas. And Jonathan Karl sat down for an exclusive interview with Laura Bush about their new outside D.C.

What was going through your mind as that helicopter left Washington?

It was bittersweet.I mean it was sad to leave, but it was also, you know,we are looking forward to our new life and to our private life. And so, sort of every emotion was part of leaving Washington. But I think we ve settled very well, and we are looking forward to the next part of our life.

So...How is this transition though...?

There are a lot of things are very different, obviously we really miss the all the great people that work for us that we spend everday with them, and I got to know so well.George is on the black berry to them now all the time. But you know it's very very different life for especially for the president who had every problem in the world on his desk. One day and then an empty desk the next day.

And is he having hard time adjusting ?

Not really, I don't think so.I mean it's I think I'm sort of having to adjust to not feeling stressed all the time.I think,I didn't realize how stressful that life was until I went to bed one night and thought,“ Now what am I gonna do tommorrow?”I got in bed and sort of worried and then remembered I didn't have anything to do tommorrow except unpack boxes, have fun and see my friends. One of the things that Michelle Obama gave me that last day when we left was a journal, and she had had quoted Louis LAmours calligraphied in the top of it.The words were something like You think it's an ending, but it's only a beginning,so each ending is really a beginning of something else. And certainly that's what this next part of our life is.

"What was going through your mind as that helicopter left Washington?"

“It was bittersweet. I mean, it was, it's sad to leave but it was also, you know, we are looking forward to our new life and to a private life. And so, sort of every emotion was part of leaving Washington. But I think we've settled in very well and we are looking forward to this next part of our life.”

"So how is this transition now?"

"There are a lot of things that are very different, obviously. We really miss the, all the great people that worked for us, that we spent every day with them and I got to know so well. George is on the BlackBerry to them now all the time. But you know it's a very very different life for, especially for the president who had every problem in the world on his desk one day and then an empty desk the next day."

"And is he having a hard time adjusting?"

"Not really, I don't think so. I mean it's, I think that I am sort of having to adjust to not feeling stressed all the time. I think I didn't realize how stressful that life was until I went to bed one night and thought, 'Now, what am I gonna do tomorrow?' I got in bed and sort of worried and then remembered I didn't have anything to do tomorrow except unpack boxes and have fun and see my friends. One of the things that Michelle Obama gave me that last day when we left was a journal. And she had had a quote of Louis L'Amour's calligraphy in the top of it. The words were something like "You think it's an ending, but it’s only a beginning," so that each ending is really a beginning of something else. And certainly that's what this next part of our life is."
