And so we meet again here in the name of VOA Special English now at 15:30 Universal Time.
[1] In the news of this day, the Pakistan army says it is investigating reports that Pakistani Taliban leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, is dead. A Pakistan's state television report said that the man died and has been buried. Earlier reports said he was killed in an American missile attack about two weeks ago. However, the Taliban released two voice recordings that it said proved Mr. Mehsud survived the attack. Some reports say he may have been killed in another attack a few days later. The Taliban in Pakistan dismissed the report of his death and burial on Sunday. The group says Hakimullah Mehsud is alive and safe.
[2] Also in Pakistan, a bomb explosion has killed two soldiers and wounded two others in the northwestern part of the country. Officials say the attack happened in the Mohmand tribal area. On Saturday, a suicide bomber killed at least 16 people at a security station in the northwestern tribal area of Bajaur. The Pakistani government signed a peace agreement with militants in that area almost a year ago.
However, intense fighting between the military and rebels has increased there in recent months.
[3] China's foreign minister has criticized American plans to sell weapons to Taiwan. Yang Jiechi says the plan harms China's national security and its efforts toward reunification with Taiwan. Mr. Yang says China strongly opposes the plan. The United States announced on Friday that it will sell Taiwan $6,400,000,000 worth of military equipment. The next day, China suspended military exchanges and security talks with the United States.
But an American State Department official said that United States’ policy on Taiwan adds to security and strength in the area.
[4] A Chinese court has sentenced a popular Tibetan singer to 19 months in prison. Tashi Dondrup was found guilty of producing an album containing subversive songs. The singer was arrested last month after his album, Torture without Trace, was banned. The album contains songs the Chinese government's campaign against demonstrators in Tibet in 2008. That is what the songs about. Tashi Dondrup was detained by Chinese officials in 2008 for music he has produced. One song was called the Year of 1959, which is when the Tibetan uprising and the Dalai Lama's exile took place.
[5] Chinese officials say an earthquake in southwestern Sichuan province on Saturday killed one person and injured at least 11 others. American experts say that the earthquake measured 5.2 in strength. Its center was near the city of Suining. Officials say more than 100 houses collapsed in the town of Moxi. Sichuan province still is rebuilding from a very powerful earthquake in May of 2008. Almost 90,000 people were killed or disappeared in the quake. And more than five million people lost their homes.
[6] Malawi has taken over the chairmanship of the African Union. The change caused intense debate in a meeting of the AU Governing Council. Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi had sought a second one-year term as chairman. During his chairmanship, he was pushing for creation of a central governing base for Africa. But African leaders rejected Mr. Gaddafi's proposal for a second term. The Africa Heads of State are meeting in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also is at that conference. He is urging movement in peace talks for Darfur, Sudan.
[7] Officials in Yemen say 20 people have died in fighting between military forces and Shiite Muslim rebels. The fighting began the day after the leader of the rebels in northern Yemen said he would accept terms of a government ceasefire. Abdul-Malik al-Houthi spoke in a radio broadcast. He said he wanted to prevent the deaths of civilians. He said the next move is up to Yemen's government. However, a spokesman in Sana said on Sunday that the government is rejecting the ceasefire. He says the rebels have not promised to end attacks on Saudi Arabia.
[8] Iraq's government has awarded a business agreement to the Russian energy company Lukoil and its Norwegian partner. The two companies will develop a major oilfield in southern Iraq. Iraq signed the agreement with Lukoil and Norway's Statoil for expansion of the west Qurna Phase Two oil field. It is one of Iraq's largest oil fields. That field is known to contain at least 13 billion barrels worth of oil. Iraq has made a series of business agreements with foreign energy companies in recent weeks to develop Iraqi oil resources.
[9] And sports news, tennis star Roger Federer has won a record 16th major championship. The Swiss athlete defeated Britain Andy Murray to win the Australian Open Men's Tennis Championship in Melbourne. On Saturday, American Serena Williams of the United States won her fifth Australian Open. She defeated Justine Henin of Belgium.
