Malaysia Airlines says it's once again allowing checked bags on all flights out of KL, a temporary ban affected Malaysia Airlines routes, particularly routes well specifically routes from KL up to Europe, particularly London, Paris and Amsterdam, the airline says the reason why was a reasonably strong headwinds that limited its ability to safely carry the luggage, apparently with the headwinds, the airline was given a much longer route to get to Europe and therefore wouldn't have had enough fuel for its ultimate safety as required, so the airline's solution was to leave the baggage behind, yes, fly the passengers but leave the baggage, somewhat unusual. Spud Hilton is the travel editor at the San Francisco Chronicle, and he joins me now, weight restricted flights are not unique, many airlines have weight restrictions on flights, but I can't remember an airline deliberately leaving the luggage behind.Well I guess it's only slightly better than actually taking the luggage and leaving the people behind, it probably wasn't the best solution Richard, but it's actually not the worst solution either. I mean when you look at it, there are only so many things you can control when you're dealing with fuel consumption, and weight is a big one, it actually I'll start it when they were making sure that they had a route that despite having bigger headwinds, had a lot fewer people on the ground with shoulder launchable missiles, I mean air Malaysia has already had a situation with this, and they really don't need that type of thing again.
All right, but one assumes we don't know this, one assumes that they'd already decided to leave the cargo behind, because that would be somewhat unconscionable if you're flying the cargo but you're flying the passengers and not taking the bags.
Yeah, well it's... one thing I found out about this job is that you really don't mess with people's luggage, we are so into making sure we take everything we want with us, and we're so protective of it, the irony is that air Malaysia actually allows more luggage on board, checked luggage than almost most other airlines, so at the point that they were leaving on a regular flight, they are actually already two tons, two metric tons heavier than the same flight that's British Airways, well you can only control so many things, so a really last minute short term solution was let's drop some of that luggage, make sure get to them eventually, because almost every airline also has a freight business, I can't say for sure if air Malaysia does. but almost every airline has a freight business, and we will get the luggage to you eventually, but at least people get to the place that they were going.

Malaysia Airlines says it’s once again allowing checked bags on all flights out of Kuala Lumpur, a temporary ban affected Malaysia Airline routes, particularly routes, well specifically routes from KL up to Europe, particularly London, Paris and Amsterdam. The airline says the reason why was a reasonably strong headwinds that limited its ability to safely carry the luggage. Apparently with the headwinds, the airline was given a much longer route to get to Europe, and therefore wouldn’t have had enough fuel for its ultimate safety as required. So the airline solution was to leave the baggage behind. Yes, fly the passengers, but leave the baggage, somewhat unusual.

Spud Hilton is the travel editor at the San Francisco Chronicle and he joins me now. Weight restricted flights are not unique. Many airlines have weight restrictions on flight. But I can’t remember an airline leaving, deliberately leaving the luggage behind.

Well, I guess it’s only slightly better than actually taking the luggage and leaving the people behind. It probably wasn’t the best solution, Richard, but it’s actually not the worst solution either. I mean, when you look at it, there’s only so many things you can control when you are dealing with fuel consumption, and weight is a big one. It actually all started when they were making sure that they had a route that despite having bigger headwinds had a lot fewer people on the ground with shoulder launchable missiles. I mean, Air Malaysia has already had a situation with this, and they really don’t need that type of thing again.

Alright, but one assumes that we don’t know this, one assumes that they’d already decided to leave the cargo behind, because that will be somewhat unconscionable if you are flying the cargo, but you are flying the passengers and not taking the bags.

Yeah, well it’s…one thing I found about this job is that you really don’t mess with people’s luggage. We are so into making sure we take everything we want with us, and we are so protective of it. The irony is that Air Malaysia actually allows more luggage on board, you know, checked luggage than almost other airlines. So at the point that they were leaving on a regular flight, they are actually already two tons, two metric tons heavier than the same flight that’s British Airways. Well, you can only control so many things. So a really last minute, short-term solution was let’s drop some of their luggage, make sure get to them eventually, because almost every airline has a freight business. I can’t say for sure if Air Malaysia does…

It does, it does.

…but almost every airline has a freight business and we will get the luggage to you eventually, but at least people got to the place that they were going.

Yes, fly the passengers but leave the baggage, somewhat unusual. Spert Hilton is the travel editor at San Francisco Cornichon and he joins me now.

Weight-restricted flights are not unique. Many airlines have weight restrictions on flights, but I can’t remember an airline deliberately leaving the luggage behind.

One thing I found about this jot is that you really don’t mess with people’s luggage. We are so into making sure we take everything we want with us and we are so protective of it. The irony is that Air Malaysia actually allows more luggage on board. Check luggage of most other airliners. So at the point they are leaving on a regular flight, they are actually two metric tons heavier than the same flight, that’s British Airways. You can only control so many things, so our really last-minute short-term solution was let’s drop some of the luggage, make sure it gets to them eventually because almost every airliner also has a freight business. It does.

homework---Malaysia airline says it's once again allowing checked bags on all flights out of Q. a temporary ban effected Malaysia airline routes particularly routes routs pacific ally routes from Cairo out to Europe, to London and Paris and Amsterdam. The airline says the reason why was a resbly strong head winds that limited its ability to safely carry the luggage apparently with the head winds the airline was giving a much longer route to get to Europe and therefore wouldn't head enough fuel for its autonets as safely as required. So the airline solution was to leave the baggage behind. Yes, fly the passengers but leave the baggage. So...S.H. is the traveler ..at San Frensisco and he joins me now. Weight restricted flights are not unique, many airlines have weight restrictions on flights. But I can't remember airline leaving deliberately leaving the luggage behind. Well I guess it's always slowly better than actually taking the luggage and leaving the people behind. It probably wasn't the best solution Richard, but it's  not the worst solution either. I mean, when you look at it, there are only so many things you can control when you deal in a few consumption and weight is a big one. It actually all started when they were making sure they had a route despite having bigger head wings, had a lot fewer people on the ground with shoulder launchable missors. I mean merely air Malaysia already had a situation with this and they really don't need that type thing again. Alright, but one assumes and we don't know this, one assumes that already decided to leave the cargo behind because that would be somewhat unconcienable if you are flying the cargo but you are flying the passengers and not taking the bags. Yeah, well it's one thing enfound this jad is that you really don't mess with people's  luggage. We are so into making sure we take everything we want with us, we are so protective of it. The...air Malaysia actually allows more luggage on board you check luggage then almost most of the airlines. So at the point they were leaving on a regular flight actually already two tons, two matric tons heavier than the same flight that's British airways. Well you can only control so many things. So a really last ..short term solution was let's drop some of the luggage make sure gets to them eventually because almost every airline also is a free business I can't say for sure for air Malaysia does but almost every air has a free business and we'll get that luggage too eventually but at least people got to the place that they were going.
