In the aftermath of the massive F wildfire, Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau arrived to see the devastation for himself, this disaster the new leader's first real test. For many years F contributed huge amounts to Canada's well-being, to the growth of our economy, now this community needs help, and I can guarantee you Canada will be here.
I can feel the heat here, this is insane.
The fire which was nicknamed the Beast ruined over 2,000 homes and businesses, and forced the evacuation of nearly 100,000 people from the oil * region of Alberta. As fire fighters work around the clock to tame it, astonishingly there were no deaths.
Their expertise and their selfless dedication to fighting the fires and to the well-being of evacuees reminds us all of the tremendous value of our public service, and I know you'll join me and all Canadians in offering our sincere gratitude for their continued efforts.
But it will take more than handshakes and photo opportunities to fix what has been broken here, many have lost everything and don't even know if they'll be able to return.
Troudeau has set up a special cabinet to help coordinate this recovery and building effort, but he knows with high temperatures and dry conditions, Alberta will well face more wildfires before the summer is over.
