Live from NPR news in Washington, I am Jack Spear.
In a standoff over the balance of power between the government’s legislative executive branches. House judiciary committee chairman Jerry Nadler is ** up the pressure on attorney general William Barr to release unredacted portions of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russian report or face contempt of congress. NPR’s Kelsey Snow reports Nadler is giving Barr until Monday morning to respond. House democrats are giving Barr through the weekend to comply with the subpoena to turn over the entire Mueller report on Russian election interference. Nadler informed Barr of the new deadline in this letter to the justice department. In the letter, Nadler says the committee has prepared to make quote ‘every realistic effort to reach a commendation with the department’. But Nadler says he will move to contempt proceedings if the department continues what he called ‘baseless refusals to comply with the subpoena’. Democrats are escalating their demands for documents related to the Mueller report and other ongoing investigations into the Trump administration. Kelsey Snow, NPR news, Washington.
President Trump spoke today with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on a wide range of topics including nuclear weapons, the possibility amid including China in a three party arms deal, and the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. There is also apparently a very brief mention of special counsel Robert Mueller’s just completed Russian report, something Trump says Putin downplayed. ‘Sort of smiled when he said something to the effect that it’s started off as a mountain and ended up being a mouse. But he knew that, because he knew there was no collusion.’ White house press secretary Sarah Sanders says the call lasted a little more than an hour. Trump on the twitter message says the two men also spoke about North Korea.
The Mississippi river hit its highest level ever today as record flooding continues there with additional rain in the forecast. NPR’s Wenzer Johnston reports flash flood alert turned effect for eight states in the Midwest from Texas to Ohio. Many roads and businesses remain closed in Davenport Iowa after a temporary levee broke this week, leaving many parts of the downtown area under water. Lucind Parker of Iowa homeland security and emergency management says the city of Davenport and surrounding Scott County are on high alert, ‘there are very closing monitoring the conditions of the flood barriers, especially given the fact I think they’ve been above flood stage for 40 plus days already.’ Local officials say they plan to summit damage estimates to the federal emergency management agency. In March, Iowa received a presidential disaster declaration for flooding along the Missouri River. Wenzer Johnston, NPR news.
The service sector continued to expand last month, institute for supply management says its service sector index fell slightly to 55.1, held over any rating above 50 signal strength in the service sector.
Stocks rallied at weekend on wall street, the DOW was up 197 points today.

Acting US defense secretary Patrick Shanahan says he and other senior members of president Trump’s national security team have met with US southern command to discuss Venezuela. in interview with reporters, Shanahan declined to identify what military options ** the US is considering. Meanwhile the standoff in Venezuela also continues after several days of **. There appears to be a standoff between president Nicolas Maduro and US supported opposition leader Wan Guido.
Gaza health officials say Israeli forces killed four Palestinians today while Israeli army says shots spotted from Gaza injured two of its solders. NPR’s Zevenlaf reports on the recent violence. The Gaza health ministry said Israeli air strike killed two Palestinians. Hamas said that the two men were members of its militant wing al-Qassam. The health ministry said the Israeli forces killed two other Palestinians who were shot near the fence with Israel. There were protests and clashes there with Israeli troops. Israeli army said it struck a Hamas military post in response to shootings from Gaza which injured two Israeli solders. The escalation threatens to abandon a recent Egyptian mediated effort to restore calm in exchange for Israel’s easing restriction for Gaza. For NPR news, I am N Zevenlaf, in Telaviv.
American airline says it intends to expand its most profitable airport Dallas Fort Worth International carrier today, opening 15 new gates at the airport and adding 100 daily flights to its American Eagle affiliate. by early next month Fort Worth based American says it hopes to operate more than 900 daily flights from DFW, that will be up from 800 last summer.
