What could be another wave of violence in Afghanistan if it weren't. President Donald Trump has called off talks in what he says was a scheduled Camp David meeting with the Taliban. Trump's weekend announcement came shortly after some highly sensitive events, including two attacks, one of which claimed the life of a US soldier. "Camp David would have been a good place, but I don't want to meet them under circumstances where they go around and try and make themselves a little more important by killing a soldier, by killing actually also a great NATO soldier, in addition to our soldier and also a total of 12 people. I don't want that." The attacks came even as the Taliban was said to be finalizing a deal with the US to end nearly 18 years of fighting. Taliban vowed to continue their fight against foreign occupation. It's not clear whether the talks between the two sides will resume.

Two Cincinnati area Planned Parenthood clinics are closing after facing state and federal pressures. The closures are the latest in the battle between the advocates and opponents of abortion rights. Cincinnati member station reporter Ambriehl Crutchfield has more.

The Springdale and Western Hills locations will be closing on September 20. The Trump administration recently started enforcing a Title X gag rule. It forbids doctors from referring patients to clinics that offer abortion services. Kersha Deibel is the head of the Planned Parenthood in Southwest Ohio. "are cutting Planned Parenthood in Southwest Ohio at the title 10 program has left Planned Parenthood with a hole in our funding which has forced us to close these two health centers." Clinic officials say the locations have more than 6,000 patients a year. Planned Parenthood officials say neither location offered abortion services. The closures leave five clinics in the Greater Cincinnati region. For NPR News, I am Ambriehl Crutchfield.

A Food and Drug Administration is warning vaping company Juul that was violating the law by suggestion its products are a safe alternative to cigarettes. As NPR's Richard Harris.

The FDA's warning letter says Juul has the right to sell its vaping products to adults, but the company is violating the law by marketing its products, says "the safer alternatives to cigarettes". Products that claim to help people reduce the risk of tobacco are covered by its specific part of the law, and Juul's products have not been granted approval in that category. To do that, the company would need to submit credible scientific evidence. Health researchers have noted that vaping products have far less of the toxic chemicals such as tar that are found in cigarettes, but the longtime risk of vaping is unknown, and this product still contains addictive nicotine. The company, which has 15 days to respond, says it will fully cooperate with the FDA. Richard Harris, NPR News.

Americans appear to be addicted to snacks, and health and nutrition experts say they are trying to determine what that might mean for health and obesity. Health officials say research shows that while in the late 70s around 40% of American adults said they didn't have any snacks during the day, by 2007 only 10% could say that. The finding is looking at what roles snacking plays in weight gain and obesity.
