Live from NPR news in Washington. I'm Jack Speer.

The Treasury Department has announced sanctions on three North Korean hacking groups accused of cyberattacks in the US. More from NPR's Michelle Caleman. The Lazarus Group is among the three singled out in the new sanctions that's widely believed to have hacked Sony Pictures and was linked to the WannaCry ransomware attacks which the Treasury Department says affected at least 150 countries around the world and shut down about 300,000 computers. UN investigators estimate that North Korea has earned 2 billion dollars through cyberattacks as a way to get around international sanctions. North Korea denies that. The US says those illicit funds ultimately help North Korea's nuclear and missile programs. Michelle Caleman, NPR news, the State Department.

California's biggest utility company has reached an 11-billion-dollar settlement in the wake of deadly wild fires that devastated parts of that state last year. Ted Goldberg from member station KQEU in San Francisco has more. The settlement stems from claims from last year's massive camp fire in the Northern California places from the year before. Investigators have concluded that many of them were caused by PG&E’s Equipment. Insurance companies had asked for 20 billion dollars during the company's bankruptcy proceeding while the amount in today's announcement is less than that, it's still much higher than PG&E’s first major settlement of wild fire claims. The latest deal needs to be approved by a bankruptcy judge. For NPR news, I'm Ted Goldberg in San Francisco.

The new Catholic Bishop of West Virginia says he's under orders by the Vatican to clean up the mess left behind by his predecessor. Glynis Board of West Virginia Public Radio reports Bishop Michael Bransfield resigned earlier this month amid allegations of financial and sexual misconducts. The Washington Post reports former Bishop Michael Bransfield spent 2.4 million dollars traveling to London, Paris, Rome and the Caribbean, flying in private jets and renting limousines. The newspaper says he also gave hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash gifts to other clerics. Even before these new reports, the Vatican appointed replacement Bishop Mark Brennan has been working on how Bransfield will atone for his conduct. 'If he cooperates, it will show, I think, another side of him. We will see, but it can still be done without it.' Bishop Brennan says it's yet to be determined how Bransfield will make amends. For NPR news, I'm Glynis Board.

The nation's retailers were taking in a bit more money than expected last month pointing to still solid spending on the part of consumers. Commerce Department says retail sales rose four tens of one percent in August boosted by increased spending on motor vehicles, building materials, healthcare and hobbies. Previous month's retail sales figures were also revised higher. Sales at the retail level are closely watched and spending by consumers accounts for roughly two thirds of the overall economy.

On Wall Street, the Dow was up 37 points. You're listening to NPR.

UN Refugee Agency is warning Thursday Supreme Court ruling upholding restrictions on asylum seekers erodes their right to international protections. Lisa Schlein reports from Geneva the ruling effectively bars most migrants from seeking asylum in the US, including those from Central America. The UN Refugee Agency says it fears the Supreme Court ruling will have a negative impact on the safety and wellbeing of asylum seekers. Spokesman Andrej Mahecic says people fleeing violence or persecution must be able to access asylum procedures and granted international protection. 'Our concern is with the people, families, unaccompanied children and other individuals moving through Mexico today from Central American and elsewhere who are in urgent need of safe haven.' Mahecic says it's essential to quickly identify these people, give them the safety and aid they deserve and need, including the right to asylum. For NPR news, I'm Lisa Schlein in Geneva.

According to sources with knowledge of the matter, NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown will be eligible to play for the New England Patriots. That’s despite accusations of rape and sexual assault in a pending civil case in Florida. Sources say Brown won't be placed on the commissioner's exempt list because no criminal charges have been filed. Brown has denied the allegations coming from a former trainer. The Patriots play at Miami on Sunday. Brown was acquired by the Patriots in a trade with Oakland this month.

Crude oil futures prices move lower. Oil down 24 cents a barrel today to end the session at 54.85 a barrel in New York.
