Defence secretary Mark T. Esper says joint US South Korean military exerciese will be postponed as the Trump administration work to seal a deal with North Korea.

I see this is a good phase effort by the Unite States and Republican Korea to enable peace to shape the trial if you will, to facilitate a political agreement, a deal if you will, at least, the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

The joint training exercises have long been critized by the North. But Esper says the decision is in no-way a concession by the US. Trump's met Kim Jeong-eun three times since 2018, trying to end the North missile and nuclear programs and today tweeted Kim should act quickly to get the job done. Last week North Korea says a turndown of US offer for new talks ahead of the year long deadline Pyongyang set for Washington to show more flexibility and negotiations.

The Impeachment inquiry into president Trump and his dealings with Ukrine is picking up a momentum as it enters its second week of public hearings. NPR's Amy Held reports eight people who have already testified behind close doors are scheduled to appear again this time in public before the House intelligence comittee this week.

Lieutenant colonel  Alexander Vindman with the national security council appears on Tuesday. He was listening in on the July phone call between Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart, now at the center of the probe. Vindam's testified the White House filed and edited record of that call. That left out key words and freezes, placing in and more sucure are kind of system than usual. Kurt Volker, former US special envoy to Ukrine appears later Tuesday. He's testified there was no quid pro quo. But democrats will likely use his text messages to boost the case that US military aid was used as a leverage against Ukrine to investigate the Bidens. Gordon Sondland the US embassador to the EU appears Wednesday. He texted with Volker about Trump wanting the deliverable. Amy Held, NPR News Washington.

Police in the southeast European country of Croatia shot at migrants trying to slip into neighboring Slovenia. Joanna Kakissis reports one man is in critical condition.

Speaking to reporters Croatian interior minister Davor Bozinovic would not say how many migrants had been shot at. He also did not review their nationalities. He did say that one of the migrants has been hospitalized because of gun shot wounds. He promised authorities would investigate. Croatia is cracking down on border security because it's trying to get into the European Union's passport freezone. The EU drastically tightened its borders after 2015 when more than a million migrants survived. The few migrants who managed to get in now, travelled through Balkan countries like Croatia, Slovenia as they try to reach western Europe. Neighboring Bosnia which is not in the EU accuses Croatia of pushing back migrants. For NPR News, I'm Joanna Kakissis. And you are listening to NPR News from Washington.

The Legoonx city of Venice was hit today by a record third exceptional high tide in five days. It's the worst week of flooding since the statistics began in 1872. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports.

Venice officials said the high water mark was just under five feet over sea level, for less than what had been predicted because the forecast of heavy suddenly winds proved strong, nevertheless officials closed access to St.Markx square, because temporary elevated walkways were underwater. Water bus service was suspended because the boats couldn't pass under low hanging bridges. As the tide receded Venetians began mopping up selvage what they could. From many hours, tourists and local still had to wade through knee high mirky water and spindly of heated noil and waste. Floods also hit Florance with the Ardinox river reaching its highest levels in 20 years. And in the Alpsx, snow storms triggered power outages. Sylvia Poggioli NPR News, Venice.
