House speaker Nancy Pelosi signing articles of impeachmemt ahead of their delivery to the senate a short time ago. That follows the historic House vote today, 228:193, approving a resolution to submit the articles, signing up will be only the third senate impeachment trial in US history.

President Trump today signed a preliminary trade deal with China, he describes as a partial truce in their trade war. NPR's Scott Horsley reports Beijing is expected to boost its purchases of US products in exchange for some limited tariff relief.

The so-called phase one agreement calls for China to buy extra 200 billion dollars worth of US products over the next two years. That's increased more than 15% over existing export levels. President Trump boasted about the change during a White House signing ceremony.

We delighted that the Chinese consumers will now enjoy the greater access to the best products on earth. Those may grow and raise right here in the USA.

The deal also requires China to provide more safeguards for American company's intellectual property and technology nohow, in exchange Trump agrees to suspend some tariffs on Chinese imports but most the goods the US buys from China will still be subjected to a stiff import tax. The government's producer price index that measure the cost of goods before they head down the pipeline to consumers took a slight bump up in December. The labor department says it producer price index rose 0.10%.

Stocks gained ground today on news of the US CHina trade signing. The Dow was up to 29,030. This is NPR.

Virginia lawmakers have approved the resolution to ratify the equal rights amendment becoming the 38th state of 38 required to do so. Both the state's senate and House of delegates today voting to approve the amendment which bans sex discrimination and is a major victory for women's rights advocates. However it's also far from certain the measure actually added to the US constitution. That's because the justice department maintains the deadline to add the amendment to the constitution has expired. The vote comes decades after congress set the ERA to states in 1972.

In the small business owners will be getting a significant financial boost from the online retail giant Amazon. Shamida Potokxxx reports that during a three-day visit to south Asia, foundering CEO Jeffrey Preston Bezos pledged to have the investment as his company faces going back clash from local businesses.

Bezos says over the next five years, his company will invest one billion dollars to help small businesses in India sell their products online. Owners of breaking modern stores in the country say Amazon's heavy discounts hurt their profits. As Bezos arrived in New Delhi dozens of protesters gathered in several cities across India, organized by local trade unions. His visits go inside for the government investigation into Amazon's black assist offering exclusive deals, especially on smartphones. Many alleged that these practices unfair and illegally undercut local businesses. Amazon denies that. For NPR News, I'm Shamida Potokxxx, Indialanderxx, India.

Crude oil futures prices close lower today, oil down $0.42 a barrel to end the session at $57.81 a barrel in New York.
