HOMEWORK
“That’s right, woodchuck, chuckers. It’s Groundhog Day. Get out. I’m check on hog out there.”

February 2nd the day each year when we look towards oversize rodents to find out how much more winter will endure. In honor of the occasion, here’s 7 things you might not have known about the groundhog.

No. 1, the ground hog’s scientific name is marmota monax, making it one of 14 types of marmot that can be found in northern hemisphere. “Nice marmot!” Marmots are members of the sciuridae family, which makes the groundhog just a really big ground squirrel.

No. 2, as just noted, the groundhogs are a type of marmot, so you could accurately say “Hey, that marmot just saws shadow.” You can also refer to them as woodchucks, whistle pigs or land beavers, depending on where you’re from. The name whistle pig comes from a high pitch whistle that groundhog is to make to warn the rest of the colony of danger. Contrary to what you might think, the name woodchuck has nothing to do with wood. It’s arise from a _ name for the animal, _. A big enough groundhog could nevertheless chuck some wood.

No. 3, male and female groundhogs tent to occupy the same territories year after year. Females generally keep to themselves with only around 10% overlap during the late spring as them try to expand their home ranges. Males also tent to avoid other males but they have much larger home ranges. Their territories can overlap with as many as females’ territories.

No. 4, infant groundhogs are usually born around mid April and after just 2 or 3 months, they are ready to set up from their own. But around 1/3 of juvenile females stay at home for nearly a year right up till mom gives birth to the next _ of babies. While dad has his own _ elsewhere, he visits each of his mate _ every day until the infants’ birth.

No. 5, groundhogs salute each other with a unique greeting. Groundhog number 1 approaches and touches his/her nose to the mouth of groundhog number 2. Scientists call this behavior nasal-oral-contact.

No. 6, the animals might be called groundhogs but they are quite adapted at climbing trees. So next time you are in groundhog territory, look out.

And No. 7, when it comes accurately predicting the weather, the famous P and T _ has been correct only around 30% of the time since 1969. That’s according to an analysis by meteorologists from weather underground. You’d have a higher rate of accuracy by simply flipping a coin but nobody can come P and T to watch a coin flip. “You want a prediction about the weather, you are asking the wrong _.”
