The ban, originally for two weeks, hasbeen extended by 7 days and it is preventing thousands of Chinese studentsattending Australian universities and colleges. The tourism industry here believes the financial impact ofthe coronavirus will be worse than the damage caused by the bush fire crisis.

The United States confirms it negotiated a 7-day reduction in violenceagreement with the Taliban in a possible step toward a political end of the warin Afghanistan. Under the temporary accord, talks between the insurgents andthe Afghan government are to begin within 10 days.
