___ plasma has been used in the past with some success to treat other viral outbreaks, most recently SARS and Ebola. The idea is that the plasma from recovered patients will contain antibodies that were effective in fighting off the disease once, so they could help other patients whose immune system is struggling with the infection. FDA still wants clinical trials of the approach to be conducted, but in the meantime, it will allow doctors to seek permission to treat patients in dire need on a case by case basis.
