House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says a group of lawmakers plan to work throughout a week long, 4th of July recess on the next round of cv aid. NPR's XX reports. Democrats and Republicans disagree on the size and scope of the relief, though.
The Speaker Pelosi says members of the appropriations committee will be working throughout the break in the hopes of reaching an agreement on cv spending in the coming weeks. Some key provisions of the care act including the 600 dollars in weekly federal unemployment benefits expire at the end of July. House Democrats already approved another 3 trillion dollars including extended unemployment increases in food stamps and more stringent worker protections. Some Republicans say the bill should total less than a trillion dollars. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters that while he supports some unemployment insurance protections, he does not think people should receive more than they were making at work.

This morning is better than expected. Jobs numbers sent stock prices sharply higher today. NPR's XX reports. The DOW Jones industrial average finished up just over a 3rd of a percent.
The Labor Department says the nation's unemployment rate fell to 11.1% in June. That's still considered very high, but it's come down a lot since the pandemic got under way. The economy regained 4.8 million jobs with much of the rebound happening in leisure and hospitality. Some economists cautioned that the numbers may not reflect the current state of the job market. Many states saw a sharp rise in cv cases late in the month and businesses have been forced to close again. Still, investors were encouraged by the falling jobless numbers, and stocks were broadly higher.
