Sources are telling NPR that president-elect Joe Biden is expected to nominate Miguel Cardona to serve as his Education Secretary. Here's NPR's Juana Summers. Biden's selection of Miguel Cardona to serve as Secretary of Education fulfills his campaign promise of packing educators with public school experience for the job. Cardona is the education commissioner for the state of Connecticut, and he's spent his entire career in the state. He's worked as elementary school teacher, principal, district administrator and assistant superintendent. Biden has been facing pressure from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and other groups, to nominee or point more Latinos to cabinet level positions and other top government jobs. Biden has already named 2 other Latinos as his pick for cabinet roles. Juana Summers, NPR news.
New York governor Andrew Cuomo says hospitals throughout the state are now testing for new highly contagious variant of the coronavirus identified in the United Kingdom. NPR's Sully Hersher has more. Governor Cuomo says more than 3,700 coronavirus sequences have been examinated in New York, but the UK variant hasn't yet turned up. So far it's been detected in countries of ***, Austria, and Iceland. But the CDC says the new strain has yet to be found anywhere in the Unite States. *** slow it down, Cuomo has struck an agreement with Delta, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic - no passenger can fly from the UK to JFK without a negative covid test first. Roughly 50,000 New Yorkers have been vaccinated so far, in the state of some 19 million. But the holiday's coming up, and infection is expected to continue to rise. Cuomo asked medical personnels providing vaccines to skip time off. Sully Hersher, NPR news.
World Health Organization says it's examining the new variant of the coronavirus. As Lisher *** reports from Geneva, the WHO does not believe the new strain is necessary caution alarm. The World Health Organization says people shouldn't get overly alarmed over this new coronavirus strain, as mutations are normal parts of the evolution of a pandemic. It says investigations are underway, to determine the celebrity of the new variant, and see if it has any impacts on the efficacy of the vaccines. When they meet, health experts will discuss strategy to counter this new more infectious coronavirus. Reporter *** in Geneva.
A coordinator of the White House's Coronavirus Response Experts said she's planning to retire, however Dr. Deborah Birx also said she's willing to help president-elect Joe Biden's team, with his coronavirus response, in any ways possible. Birx is in an interview with Newsy, she did not give a specific timetable for when she intends to retire. Marks came just days after Associated Press report said she travelled out of the state for the thanks-giving holiday.

The incoming Biden administration says the top federal prosecutor of Manhattan would remain in her role until the president-elect decides whether to replace her. Federal Court for the Southern District of New York today extended the tenure of the acting US attorney Audrey Strauss, the 73-year-old is the 2nd women to lead one of the country's most prestigious prosecutor's offices. She took office in June after the abrupt departure of Geoffrey S Berman, who led investigations into several allies of President Trump. Berman later said Attorney General William Barr repeatedly urged him to take a new Justice Department position.
Concert venues that have been closed since the start of the pandemic will get a lifeline of the new coronavirus relief package. The bill's setting aside 15 billion dollars of grants to ***, venues as well as statue museums and others hit by the pandemic. Here's NPR's Andew Limbong. Small independent music venues have been hit particularly hard by the pandemic. They rely on packing groups of people together in small intimate places. Promoters and organizers rely on these venues to be opened to get their acts and tours. The language of the bill helps them all - Broadway Theaters, promoters, talent representatives, movie theaters and more can apply for grant *** for small business administration based on their revenue from 2019 - grants *** of 10 million dollars. Dayna Frank, board president of the National Independent Venue Association said in a statement, that this grant funding is what the industry "desperately need to emerge from the devastating year". Crude oil futures prices moved low. Oil downed 95 cents a barrel today at $47.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
