In a recorded phone call this weekend, President Trump is heard urging Georgia's Republican Secretary of State to overturn the state's presidential results. Georgia Public Broadcasting's Stephen Fowler has more. In an hour-long call on Saturday obtained by Georgia Public Broadcasting President Trump continued to claim without evidence that he won Georgia and that fraud tainted the election. He told Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to undo the certified results that were confirmed by a full hand audit and a machine recount, and to do it fast ahead of crucial Senate runoffs Tuesday. "And you would be respected, if really respected, if this thing could be straightened out before the election. There's a big election coming up on Tuesday." The White House has not responded to NPR's request for comment. Republican incumbents David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler face Democrats John Ossoff and Raphael Warnock on Tuesday in runoffs that will decide control of the Senate. Trump also suggested Republican turnout would be lower Tuesday because Georgia officials did not alter the results for the president. For NPR news, I'm Stephen Fowler, in Atlanta.
The number of coronavirus cases continues to surge across the country and California is especially hard-hit. Infections in Los Angeles have doubled in the past month, surpassing 800,000 this weekend. From member station KPCC, Jessica Ogilvie has more. This is the fastest acceleration of the pandemic so far, marking a doubling of cases in LA County since the end of November. Health officials say they're desperate as LA hospitals are at capacity. Ambulances are being forced to wait as many as 8 hours, treating those patients in the vehicle when no emergency rooms/beds are open. Some funeral homes are also over-booked in turning families away. Authorities are worried the worst is not over yet, with another post new year surge possible. For NPR news, I'm Jessica Ogilvie, in Los Angeles.
In Nashville, the FBI says it's looking into materials the suspect in a Christmas morning bombing said to people he knew before the attack. From member station at WPLN Emily Siner has more. Local media reports the packages include pages of conspiracy theories and thumb drives of videos. Officials still have not established a motive for why Anthony Warner blew up his RV in downtown Nashville, which damaged dozens of buildings and affected phone communications in several states. NBC news says officials are also examining Warner's digital devices. Warner was a 63-year-old white man who law enforcement originally said had not been on their radar. But last week the Nashville police released a record from 2019 showing that Warner's girlfriend had reported him for building a bomb. Police and the FBI have both defended how they responded to that report. Neither department made contact with Warner at the time. For NPR news, I'm Emily Siner, in Nashville.

City officials in Kenosha Wisconsin will vote on emergency declaration tomorrow, to prepare for possible violence when prosecutors announce whether a white cop will be charged in the shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man was now paralyzed. That announcement is expected in the next 2 weeks. The safety efforts will include demonstration space, road closures, curfews and protective fencing. The 29-year-old was shot 7 times in the back by officer Rusten Sheskey in August. Police said they thought Blake had a weapon in his car and he later admitted to having a knife in the vehicle. The shooting sparked protests and looting in the city.
China has replaced North America as the world's biggest movie market near 2020. NPR's Bob Mondello has more. It was bound to happen eventually with nearly 4 times as many people in China as in the US and Canada. But Chinese box office wasn't expected to pass North American box office for a few more years. The pandemic sped things - though China was the first nation to close cinemas due to Covid-19, it was also among the first to re-open them. As a result, China has 4 films on the worldwide box office top 10 eldest usually dominated by Hollywood. That includes at number one the Chinese World War II epic <The 800>. The top closing US film <Bad Boys for Life> managed a worldwide take of 426 million dollars, good for second place in pandemic-diminished 2020. Had it opened a year earlier, it would only have ranked 19th. Bob Mondello, NPR news.
