WORDS AND THEIR STORIES - Insect Expressions: I Don't Mean to Bug You

Now, the VOA Special English program WORDS AND THEIR STORIES.

(MUSIC)

There are many American expressions about insects -- like bees, for example. Bees are known as very hard workers. They always appear to be busy, moving around their homes, or hives. So you might say you were as busy as a bee if you spent your weekend cleaning your house. In fact, you might say your house was a beehive of activity if your whole family was helping you clean. You also might say you made a beeline for something if you went there right away. When we go to see a movie, my friend always makes a beeline for the place where they sell popcorn.

Here is an expression about bees that is not used much any more, but we like it anyway. We think it was first used in the nineteen twenties. If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was the bee's knees. Now, we admit that we do not know how this expression developed. If fact, we do not even know if bees have knees!

If your friend cannot stop talking about something because she thinks it is important, you might say she has a bee in her bonnet. If someone asks you a personal question, you might say "that is none of your beeswax." This means none of your business.

Speaking of personal questions, there is an expression people sometimes use when their children ask, "where do babies come from?" Parents who discuss sex and reproduction say this is talking about the birds and the bees.

(MUSIC)

Hornets are bee-like insects that sometimes attack people. It you are really angry, you might say you are mad as a hornet. Andif you stir up a hornet's nest, you create trouble or problems.

Butterflies are beautiful insects, but you would not want to have butterflies in your stomach. That means to be nervous about having to do something, like speaking in front of a crowd. You would also not want to have ants in your pants. That is, to be restless and unable to sit still.

Here are some expressions about plain old bugs, another word for insects. If a friend keeps asking you to do something you do not want to do, you might ask him to leave you alone or "stop bugging me."A friend also might tell you again and again to do something. If so, you might say he put a bug in your ear.

If you were reading a book in your warm bed on a cold winter's day, you might say you were snug as a bug in a rug. And, if you wish someone good night, you might say, "sleep tight -- don't let the bed bugs bite."

Now the VOA special English program Words and their Stories . In the early days of human history , people survived by hunting wild animals or gathering wild greens and plants for food .Then some people learned to grow crops and rise (raise) animals for food .They were the first famers .Since 16th century , the word farm ( as) has meant agricultural land .But a much older meaning of the word farm is leaded(linked) to economics .The word farm comes from the latin word feme(firma), which means (an ) unchanging payment . Experts say the earliest English (meaning of the english )word farm was a yearly payment made as a tax or rent. Farmers in early England did not own their lands ,they paid every year to use agricultural lands . In England ,farmers used hawthorn trees along the (edges of the property ). They called this road(row) of hawthorns a (hedge) .Hedging feels (fields )was how careful farmers marked and protected them .Soon people began to use the word (hedging) to describe steps that could be taken to protect against financial laws (loss).Hedging is common among (gambles) who make large benefits(bets) .A gambler gets(bets) a lot of money among (on)one team ,but to be on the safe side ,he also places a smaller (bet) on the other team to reduce a possible loss ,you may say that someone is ( hedging his bet ) when he invests several kinds of businesses. One business may fail ,but likely not all . Farmers know that it is necessary to make hail(hay )while the sun shines .Hail(hay ) has be to cut and gathered when it is dry .So a wise farmer never post (postpones) gathering when the sun is shining .Vain(rain) may soon appear .A wise person copies the farmer ,he works when the conditions are right .A new mother ,for example, quickly learn to try to sleep when her baby is quiet .Even in the middle of the day ,if the mother delays ,she may lose her chance to sleep. So the mother learns to make hail (hay )while the sun shines . Beans are popular farm crop ,but beans are used to describe something of very little value in the expression not worth a hill of beans .The expression is often used today .You could say for example ,a bad idea is not worth a hill of beans . Language expert said this expression was first used almost seven hundred years ago .He said described a message from the king of Germany to the king John of England as altogether not worth a bean .This VOA special English program Words and Stories was written by more joys when you read after . Homework

There are many American expressions about insects. Like bees, for example bees are known as very hard workers. They always appear to be busy, moving around in their homes or hives. So you might say you were as busy as a bee if you spent your wenkend cleaning your house. In fact you might say your house was a bee hive * if your whole family was helping you clean.

You also might say you made a beeline for something if you went there right away. When we go to see a movie, my friend always makes a beeline for the place where they sell popcorn.

Here is an expression about bees that is not used much any more, but we like it anyway. We think it was first used in the 1920s. If something was the best of its kind, you might say it was the bee's knees. Now we admit that we do not know how this expression developed. In fact we do not even know if bees have knees. If your friend can not stop talking about something, because she thinks it is important, you might say she has a bee in her bonnet. If someone asks you a personal question, you might say that is none of your bee's wax. This means none of your business.
