[1] China says it has successfully reduced water levels in a lake created by the big earthquake last month in Sichuan province. The Xinhua News Agency says the province’s top official made the announcement after waters began flowing from Tangjiashan Lake. The report said half of the water in the lake has been removed. Efforts to reduce water levels began on Saturday. Chinese troops used anti-tank weapons to explode rocks surrounding the lake. About 250,000 people were ordered to leave the area. More than one million others were threatened by flooding if the lake burst.

[2] An American diplomat has arrived in North Korea. The American Embassy in South Korea says Sung Kim crossed at the border village of Panmunjom. His visit is aimed at speeding up efforts by North Korea to disable its nuclear centers. Mr. Kim is the State Department’s top Korean expert. He is to return to South Korea on Wednesday before returning to Washington.

[3] Protestors gathered in South Korea’s capital Tuesday in the biggest demonstration yet against the government. The protestors are angry about the government’s decision to suspend a ban on beef imports from the United States. Reports say as many as hundreds of thousands of people took part in the demonstration. Tens of thousands of riot police and soldiers were deployed to control the crowd. Large shipping containers are being used to block streets around the official home of South Korea’s president. Earlier Tuesday a government spokesman said Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and his cabinet offer to resign during a weekly cabinet meeting. It is not clear if South Korean President Lee Myung-bak accepted the resignations.

He warned of the dangers the world would face if Iran develops nuclear weapons. Mr. Bush said now is the time for all nations to work together to stop Iran’s nuclear program. Mr. Bush thanked European Union countries for their support in Iraq and Afghanistan.

[5] The rising cost of oil imports pushed America’s trade deficit for April to its highest level in more than a year. The Commerce Department says the difference between American exports and imports was nearly 61 billion dollars for the month. That is nearly 8% more than the trade deficit for March. Late Monday American Central Bank Chairman Ben Bernanke said the threat of inflation is growing. He also said the threat of a slowing economy remains but is easing.
