Candidates supported by tea party actives own primaries ealier this year in Colorado, Connecticut...and Utah. But the biggest test yet will come when they face democrats on November 22nd. Voters will decides all seats in the House Repersentives and 37 of the 100 seats in the Senate. Repulicans are fighting to retake Congress from the deocrat party of President Obama and make gains in state elections. Peter Brown at Queenerty Univerty in ....finds that about one in eight voters support the tea praty movement. He says the big question is whether the activists will be as successful in getting people to vote in November as in the Republican primaries. Also this week the census bureau reported that the nation's offical poverty rate was fourtheen and three-tenths percent last year. It rose by just over 5 percentage point from 2008. Almosts 44 million people were in poverty, the third of increase. The number included one in five children. The poverty rate was the highest since 1994, but the number of the people was the lagest since estimates began 1959. One-fourth of Blacks and Hispanics were in poverty. So were twelve and a half precent of Asians and almost nine and a half percent of non-Hispnics whites. A family of four that earn less than 23,000 last year was consider to be living below the poverty line. Also the number of people with health insurance decreased last year,first drop since records began in 1987, almost 17 precent of the publition lack converage. People can loss insurance when they loss their jobs or change to part-time work. The health care law pass by the Congress in March aims to get almost every American insured in the coming years.
