HOMEWORK

And now to that bombshell announcement rocking the tennis world, Maria Sharapova, one of the sport's biggest stars calling a press conference, admitting she failed a drug test. ABC's Ryan Smith is here with the latest on that. Good morning to you, Ryan.

Good morning, Amy. So many thought she was going to announce her retirement, but tennis star Maria Sharapova stunned the world with that shocking announcement, saying she takes full responsibility for the failed test and that a rule change tripped her up.

This morning, Maria Sharapova, the world's highest-paid female athlete and tennis star coming clean, admitting to a failed drug test at this year's Australian Open.

“I made a huge mistake.”

Testing positive for the drug meldonium used to treat heart ailments, but some studies suggest it may boost endurance for some who take it banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency this year.

“I have been legally taking the medicine for the past ten years. Meldonium became a prohibited substance which I had not known.”

Sharapova admitting she received an e-mail from tennis officials about banned substances but…

“I did not look at the list.”

The 28-year-old, one of tennis' best, winning Wimbledon at 17, number one in the world by 18, five grand slam titles in her career, recently beset by injuries, sidelined since that Australian Open, but off the court, a sponsor's dream -- the fashion icon and businesswoman making a whopping 30 million pitching products for the likes of Nike, Avon, and Tiffany's and Porsche, hauling in more money than world number one Serena Williams, the news rocking the tennis world. Former star Jennifer Capriati lashing out on Twitter: ‘I didn't have the high priced team of doctors that found a way for me to cheat,” while Martina Navratilova tweeted: “-hope this gets cleared up as it seems to me to be an honest mistake.”

Sharapova now waiting the next steps from the International Tennis Federation, making one thing clear: “I know that with this I face consequences and I don't want to end my career this way. And I really hope that I will be given another chance to play this game.”

Sharapova's lawyer telling us that while players can be suspended for as long as four years for a failed test, players found to unintentionally fail test without fault get as little as no penalty. Now she will be provisionally suspended, starting Saturday, and already Nike and Porsches and Tag Heuer cutting ties with the star.

While the investigation continues…

Right.

It is refreshing to hear someone though openly admit to making a mistake.

Yes, coming clean.

Take the very responsibility.
