Live from NPR news I’m Jack Speer.

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. NPR’s Frankl reports Biden called on a divided America to come together and end an uncivil war.

President Biden delivered a frank but optimistic inaugural address. He acknowledged he will be judged for how he resolves the various crisis of the era, from the pandemic to racial injustice, but he also spoke of the enduring strains of democracy, he said Americans must set their political differences aside.
“We must end this uncivil war, that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this.”
Time will tell whether Biden’s message of unity holds, but he promised to work as hard for those who didn't support him as for those who did. NPR news.

Vice president Kamala Harris delivered the oath of office to 3 new democratic senators today, two democrats who won run-off elections in Georgia and one replacement of her.
“The chair lays before the senate’s two certificates of election for the state of Georgia and certificate of appointment to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of former senator Kamala D. Harris of California.”

The arrivals of senators Jon Ossoff, Raphael Warnock and Alex Padilla will give their party a de facto majority in the 50-50 split chamber, with vice president Harris a potential tie-breaking vote, republican leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to enter a power-sharing agreement with Senate Democrats unless they meet his demands, that stalemate stalled the Senate’s try to confirm Biden’s cabinet choices and begin the second impeachment trial of Donald Trump.

President Biden’s requesting a moratorium on evictions during the corona virus pandemic be extended to March, it is one of several executive actions he is taking on his first day in office. Here’s NPR’s Pam Fessler.
An existing ban on the eviction of renters is set to expire at the end of January, Biden has asked the centers for disease control and prevention to extend the ban at least through March 31th, he’s also asked congress to strengthen and extend the moratorium even further. Housing advocates applauded the move, but say renters need more protection. The eviction lab at Princeton University estimates 1.6million evictions have been prevented so far, but that more than a million other renters were still forced from their homes during the pandemic. Biden has also asked agencies to extend a foreclosure moratorium and federally guaranteed mortgages. Pam Fessler NPR news.

Stocks rose to new high on Wall Street today with the change in leadership in Washington, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 257points to 31,188, the NASDAQ rose 260 points today.

European Union leaders are hoping for a quick improvement in a transatlantic relationship once Joe Biden takes office. From Brussels Teri Schultz reports they anticipate remaining disputes should be easier to manage.
The European Union was one of Trump’s favorite targets, with his departure European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is among those expressing relief.
“After 4 long years Europe has a friend in the White House.”
In the European parliament session devoted to discussing Biden’s inauguration, she raised concerns about the January 6th violence, the continuing prevalence of misinformation and the power of online networks. Council President Charles Michel expressed hope for shared views of how to resolve remaining trans-Atlantic tensions.
“Together we must stand as the bedrock of the rules-based international order.”
Michel says he wants renewed EU-US cooperation on issues including human rights and gender equity. For NPR news I’m Teri Schultz, Brussels.
