This Steve Ember the VOA Special English Holiday Program

Music fills the air, colorful lights shine birghtly in windows. Children and adults open gifts from love ones and friends. These are all Chirstmas traditions. Another tradition is snow, Chirstmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days after the start of the winter. In many places, a blanket of clean white snow covers the ground on Christmas Day. This is what is meaned by a "White Chirstmas".

Of coures many places do not get snow in Christmas. In fact, they may be very warm this time of year. People who like snow but live where it is warm can only dream of having a White Christmas. Amerncian song writer Irving Berlin catched this feeling in his song "White Christmas". It's one of the most public Chirstmas songs of all time. The opening word explain why is the singer dreaming of the White Christmas.

Most people never hear these words, so they never really unstand the true meaning of the song. Here is how it starts.

The sun is shining, the grass is green.
The orange palm trees sway.
I never seen such a day in B* Hills Alley.
But it's December 24 and I am longing to be up the north.
Up north, where it's cold an snowy.
Not south where it's warm and sunny.

Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians have record White Christmas, but the version most people still know best was sung by Bing Crosby.

(Music)
I remain of White Christmas.
Just like the wrold I used to know.
Where the tree top glisten.
And children listen.
To hear the * in the snow.

I remain of White Christmas.
Where the christmas card I write.
May your days be merry and bright.
And may all your Christmas be white.

song writer Irving Berlin was burn in Russia in 1888. he did not celebrate Chirstmas as a religious holiday. He was Jewish. But his songs celebrates an idea of peice of happiness that anyone anywhere snowy and not can enjoy. To all of you, best wishes this holiday season from all of us in VOA Special English. This is Steve Ember.
