This is Steve Ember with VOA Special English Holiday Program.
Music fills the air. Colorful lights shine brightly in windows. Children and adults open gifts from loved ones and friends. These are all Christmas traditions.
Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days after the start of winter. In many places are blanket of clean white snow covering ground on the Christmas day. This is what is met by out white Christmas. Of course many places do not get snowing during Christmas. In fact they may be very warm this time of the year. People who like snow but live where it is warm can only dream of having a white Christmas. American song writer Ever Berlin captured these feelings in his song White Christmas. It is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. The opening words explain why the singer is dreaming of a white Christmas. Most people never hear these words, so they never really understand the true meaning of the song.
Here is how it starts:
The sun is shining, the grass is green, the --- trees wave.
I’ve never seen such a day in ---
But it is Dec. 24th.
And I am longing to be up north.
Up north, where it is cold and snowy, not south where it is warm and sunny. Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians have recorded the white Christmas. But the version most people know best was the song by --
I’m dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow

I’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Chirstmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmas ---
Song writer Berlin was born in Russia in 1888. He did not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. He was a Jewish. But his song celebrates an idea of peace and happiness, that anyone, anywhere, snowy or not, get enjoyed.
To all of you, best wishes this holiday season, from all of us in VOA Special English. This is Steve Ember.
