This is Steven Ember with the VOA special English holiday program.
Music fills the air, colorful lights shining brightly on windows. Children and adults open gifts from loved ones and friends. These are all Christmas traditions.
Another tradition is snow. Christmas eve in northern part of the world comes a few of days after the start of winter. In many places of blanket of clean white snow covers the groud on Christmas day. This is what is met by a white Christmas. Of course, many places do not yet snow on Christmas. In fact, they may be very warm this time of year. people who like snow but live where it is warm can only dream having a white Christmas.
American song writer GB captured this feelings in his song" white christmas". It is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. The opening words explained why the singer is dreaming of a white christmas. Most people never hear these words, so they never really understand the true meaning of the song.
Here is how it starts:
The sun is shining, the grass is green, the orange palm tree is swaving.
I've never seen such a day in B. hills la.But it is the Dec 24th,andI'm longing to be up north.Up north, where is cold and snowny.not south where is warm and sunny.
Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians ever recorded white christmas. But the version most people still know best was song by B.C

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
And children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmas be white

Song writer E.B was born in Russia in 1888. He did not celebrate Christmas as a religious holiday. He was Jewish. But his song celebrates an idea of peace and happiness that anyone, anywhere snowy or not can enjoy.

To all of you, best wishes this holiday season from all of us in VOA Special English. This is Steve Ember.
