Homework:
This is Steve Ember with the VOA special English holiday program.
Music fills the air, colorful light shine brightly at windows. Children and adults open gifts from loved ones and friends. These are all Christmas traditions.
Another tradition is snow. Christmas in the northern part of the world comes a few days after the start of winter. In many places a blanket of clean white snow covers the ground on Christmas Day. This is what is meant by a white Christmas. Of course, many places do not yet snow at Christmas, in fact, they may be very warm this time of the year. People who like snow but live where it is warm can only dream of having a white Christmas. American song writer / Berlin captured this feeling in his song White Christmas. It is one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time. The opening words explain why the singer is dreaming of a white Christmas. Most people never hear these words, so they never really understand the true meaning of the song.

Here is how is starts:
The sun is shinning .
The grass is green.
The arms of palm tree is swaying.
I’ve never seen such a day in /
But it is December 24th.
And I am longing to be up north.
Up north where it is cold and snowy.
Not south where it is warm and sunny.

Over the years, hundreds of singers and musicians have recorded White Christmas. But the version most people still know best was sang by /.

I ‘m dreaming of White Christmas.
Just like the ones I used to know,
Where the treetops listen.
And children listen.
To hear sleigh bells in the snow.
I’m dreaming of White Christmas
With every Christmas card I write.
May your days be marry and bright.
And may all your Christmas be right.

Song writer / Berlin was born in Russia in 1888. He did not celebrate Christmas as religious holiday. He was Jewish. But his song celebrate an idea of peace and happiness that anyone, anywhere snowy or not get enjoy.
To all of you, best wishes these holiday season from all of us in VOA special English. This is Steve Ember.
