Beethven's music is controversial, it could be interpreted in two quite extreme ways as, as very bad or very good. And therefore perhaps much more set than other musical. It was a need of framing, it needed a kind of protective envelope that create introduce it to new comers. So they would hear it in sympathetic ways. And this is something that Beethoven patrons were actively involved. They were in.....

They would stage improvisation contests. Shootouts, I'd like to call them, where each nobleman, aristocrat would sponsor a piano virtuoso and they would set them against each other. One would improvise then the other would have to imitate the tune improvise on it. Then the second one would set a new tune, and the first one would have to improvise on it. And Beethoven arrived from
Bonn, ill-come with this funny Rhineland accent, hair all over the place and he would take on these bewigged befrogged virtuosos and just run out of tone. Without suppport of his patrons, without the kind of material and public relations, tasks that they carried out on his behalf, he would not be able to compose as he did on as well as he compse but it's questionable whether he'd be able to find value for his performances, whether he'd be able to enlist musicians or whether he would be heard, whether he would have been published, and therefore whether his music would survive today.

With his opus 18 set of Sting Quartets, Beethoven now 28 organized his musical ideas more systematically. Right from his early stage, he used to make rough draft on his works and he jotted these down various scraps of paper. And then he found these scrap papers getting so muddily and disorganized that he really needed to start a proper manuscript book jotting these ideas down. And so he started using what is known as sketch books whick have a lot of musical fragments all over the place. He used to wander around the countryside with a little manuscript paper in his hand, a pencil. If he got an odd idea, he promptly jotted it down. People very often think Beethoven was very slow on composing. It took a long time while Mozart dashed off a piece very quickly. Obviously improvisation demonstrated he could invent music extraordinarily rapidly. His music is more complex than Mozart's, and it gets more complex as it goes on and this is partly through the sketch processing.
