homework The first sketches for the opening movement of the ninth symphony date from the 1816. But the intensive work was done in this house in Bonn 7 years later. Over 6 hundred pages of sketches survived. Beethoven then asked whether the philharmonic society in London might be interested in commissioning a grand symphony. And they offered 50 pounds for 2 symphonies. The idea setting Schiller' Ode to Joy to music dates back to Beethoven's time in Bonn. The sketch book show how him wrote out the words of the Ode to Joy and put in to bars but it first with no tune.
He laboriously refined the famous melody and hinted that throughout the symphony. In the midst of first movement we suddenly hear this... which is very similar to... And in the second movement even the mean right key we have... And in the third movement there is this. All alluding to finally... So there is a wonderful thread links you right through the symphony. It totally subconscious in the sort of thing that later composer, Mahler, particularly was let something use to stunning effect.
Beethoven had specially relationship with singers and chorus because he image that its kind ideal group of people who get together through the power music and in the last one of ninth symphony this is very clear. It's if you saying that just by people singing together something happens to them, they are changed through the power music. This is Beethoven.
It was a great success at its first performance. Beethoven is on the stage conducting to the side of the real conductor. At the end of it he couldn't hear the applause of course. They had to turn him around to the audience to hear the applause, wonderfully a moving moment. And yet he would actually quiet disappoint that these symphony didn't earn much money as he expected to.
