[1] Arizona Senator John McCain won the Republican Party's most important presidential nominating events on the day known as 'Super Tuesday'. Senator McCain won nine states including California, Illinois and New York. He now has more than half of the delegate votes to win his party's nomination for president. His opponents former Governors Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, each won several states but those states did not offer enough delegates to put either man close to Senator McCain. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama each won Democratic Party nominating events in several states Tuesday. Senator Clinton won the three states that offered the most Democratic candidates. Senator Obama won more states than she did but not as many (candidates rather) delegates.

[2] A Pakistani army helicopter has crashed in South Waziristan. The crash reportedly killed eight people including a general. A Pakistani army spokesman said the crash was an accident. He said technical problems appear to have been the cause. He said the crash killed Major-General Javed Sultan, the commanding officer of the Kohat garrison in South Waziristan. The accident took place near the border with Afghanistan. Pakistani security forces there have been fighting Taliban fighters and militants linked to al-Qaeda. Taliban militants in Pakistan have declared a ceasefire. The declaration comes after a month of clashes between militants and Pakistani security forces in the country's northwestern tribal areas. A spokesman for the group Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan Maulvi Umar announced the ceasefire to news reporters Wednesday. He said the Pakistani government has shown understanding over the past few days and has stopped attacks. The government had no immediate comment on the reported ceasefire.

[3] People across China are marking the start of the Lunar New Year holiday. Many Chinese are lighting fireworks and travelling home to gather with family for the New Year's celebrations. The 15-day holiday is traditionally a time for celebration and eating. But this year millions of people are still far away from family as China recovers from its worst winter weather in about 50 years. Chinese officials say many people have died in recent weeks in accidents resulting from the weather. The government says electricity has returned partially or fully to most of the areas that lost power.

[4] The Sri Lankan military says troops launched an offensive against rebel positions in northern Sri Lanka Wednesday. Twelve Tamil Tiger rebels were reportedly killed. Thirty rebel hiding places were destroyed. The military also said its airplanes bombed a meeting of rebel leaders near Kilinochchi. The Tamil Tigers have not commented on the attacks. President Mahinda Rajapaksa says his government is ready to crush the rebels. He has also said the main issue facing Sri Lanka is terrorism.
