[1] The American secretary of state and British foreign secretary have made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan. Condoleezza Rice and David Miliband met with NATO commanders and troops at an air force base in the southern city of Kandahar. They then went to Kabul for talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Ms. Rice said she made the visit to Kandahar to see an area that she said has been very active. Taliban supporters formerly controlled the area. Earlier, Ms. Rice told news reporters that Afghanistan needs to provide more help for the coalition force fighting the militants. She also said NATO forces are facing a real test in the country. She said alliance members must share the responsibility of fighting the Taliban.

[2] In Afghanistan a bomb attack has wounded three North Atlantic Treaty Organization soldiers. The alliance says a car carrying the bomb exploded near NATO vehicles in coast province Thursday. The number of suicide attacks carried out by Taliban militants has increased in recent months. Separately an Islamist website released video images showing the leader of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan Mustafa Abu al-Yazid. He seems praising al-Qaeda commander Abu al-Libi. American officials say the commander was killed last month during an American missile attack in Pakistan's tribal area.

[3] The government of Chad has ordered nighttime curfew in the capital N'Djamena and six other areas. The purpose of the curfews is to reestablish calm after a rebel offensive. French radio says a Chadian rebel leader has denied that the government is in complete control of the country. Mahamat Nouri reportedly said the government controls N'Djamena, but has no control of other areas. Rebel fighters and government forces clashed in the capital last week after a rebel offensive from the east. Also on Thursday, Chad's president urged European peacekeeping troops to deploy to Chad as soon as possible to protect refugees from the Darfur area of western Chad. The president said Chad's army has been attempting to guard camps for the refugees.

[4] Kenyan police say they will charge one of their officers with murder. Police said Constable Edward Kirui will be charged for the killings of two men last month in the western town of Kisumu. A team of investigators examined the case after the shooting was broadcast on national and international television. Police said the officer would appear in court soon. At least 1,000 people have been killed in Kenya in protests and ethnic violence since the presidential elections last December.

[5] In China, people are celebrating the starts of the Lunar New Year. Chinese television broadcast a special program as part of the celebrations marking the year of the rat. The program also honored millions of workers who are not able to return home for the holiday because of the country's worst winter weather in about 50 years. The snow and ice storms cut transportation for days. Thousands were left without power and important supplies.
