The president of East Timor José Ramos Horta has been shot and wounded in an attack at his home just outside th capital Dili. The presidential advisor said Mr Ramos Horta had been shot in the stomach and was undergoing surgery at an Australian military base in the capital. Reports say that the rebel leader Alfredo Reinado was killed in the attack which happened in the early hours in the morning.Our southeast Asia correspondent Johnson Kay
reports from Bangkok. Reinado was one of soldiers involved in the mutiny two yeas ago which led to the disintegration of Esat Timor’youth army and police force and a completely breakdown of order. An Australian led military force was invited into help stabilize the country. And last year José Ramos Horta was eclected president in peaceful ecletions with his predecessorXanana Gusmao swithching to the role of prime minister. Many of the mutineers were persuaded to put down their weapons but Reinado refused . he was captured in July 2006 but managed to escape one month later remaining in the mountains with a group of armed followers.

The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has threatened to cut off oil supply to the United States said the American oil company Exxon Mobile does not stop its legal campaign to secure the seashores of billoin of dollars in Venezuelan assets. Exxon has been taking action because it says the compensaton which has been offered by the Venezuelan government for the nationalization of its oil installation in the country has been insufficient. Presient Chavez siad Venezuela would have no choice but to harm the US if it was harmed by what he described as the outlaws of Exxon Mobile. “ Take note Mr bush Mr danger if economic war continues against Venezuela, the price of oil is going to reach two hundred US dollars and Venezuela wil get fully involved in the ecomonic war.

Leaders of the Writers Guild of Amerian have described a new deal agreed with the holleywood studios which could seen an end to months of industrial election and major sussess.The union’s members willl not be balloted on the deal which guarantees writers’more pay when their work appears on the Internet. If they approve the terms , it could pave the way for the writers to end their three-month strike and return to work. A week after fightings subsided in the Chadian capital Ndjamena,aid agencies say that they are still struggling to cope with large numbers of displaced people.An estimated of thirty thousand chadians have fled across the border into neighbouring Camoroom after rebels attacked Ndjamena last weekend. Many of them have converged on the border town of Cuseri . from where Stanni Handcoff reports. “Cuseri is normally a city- boud town. But in the past week, it has been trasformed by a massive and flood of regugees. The town is now full and bursting with civilians who fled fighting in eighbouring Chad.The lucky few are cramped at the hotel those schools those churches that many are forced to pick out in the open.Most fled with liitle more thana a cloth on their backs and when they come are hungry and impatient. The UN has started handling out much needed food mission.

Sudan has accused the United Nations of double standards in condemning an operation by government forces against rebel’ occupying three times in the Dal Full region but keeping silent by the rebel’s own attacks on the towns. The Sudanese ministry of foreign affairs siad government trops have driven out the fighters from the rebel justice and quality movement who has said it committed extra violence against civilians.
