[1]. More Australian troops and a warship have arrived in East Timor to help enforce a state of emergency. The emergency measures were ordered on Monday after gunmen attempted to murder the country's two top leaders. About 150 Australian police and troops have already arrived to help international security forces in East Timor. International troops are guarding Dili and other cities. East Timor's military commander has called for an investigation of the attempted murders. President Jose Ramos-Horta was flown to Australia after an attack at his home early Monday. Doctors say his condition is still extremely serious. Prime minister Xanana Gusmao was uninjured in a separate attack.

[2]. The leader of Burma's military government has accused dissent groups and western countries of seeking to wreck its plans for democracy. State television read a statement by General Than Shwe Tuesday. He said western countries were attempting to stop a special election on a new constitution. He accused the west of misleading the Burmese people and aiding anti-government groups.

[3]. The newly appointed interior minister in Thailand says the government is considering partial self-rule for the country's south. Chalerm Yoobamrung told news reporters in Bangkok that the government must take steps to improve the situation in three southern provinces. But he rejected the idea of full independence for the area, where a majority of the population is Muslim. About 3,000 people have been killed in southern Thailand during the past four years.

[4]. An Indonesian court, says the children of former President Suharto must defend corruption charges against their father. The lead judge told government lawyers to order at least one of the children to appear in court. The Suharto family is suspected of accepting billions of dollars through corruption during the former president's 42 years in power. The government is seeking more than one billion dollars to help pay the costs of an educational aid group formerly chaired by Mr. Suharto.

[5]. Pakistani police officials say two nuclear energy aid officials have been kidnapped in northwestern Pakistan. Officials said the two technicians were on a planned visit to Dera Ismail Khan Monday when gunmen seized them and their driver. Police say it is not clear if the kidnappers were militants or members of a criminal group. Separately, Pakistani security forces continue to search for the country's ambassador to Afghanistan Tariq Azizuddin. He disappeared on Monday while driving through the Khyber tribal area. Mr. Azizuddin was traveling to the Afghan capital Kabul. Officials fear he may have been kidnapped.

[6]. Pakistani officials have deployed tens of thousands of troops across the country to help with the parliamentary elections. Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Cheema said the Pakistani army would help keep peace and order before and during the vote next week. He said no one will be permitted to interfere with the election process. There has been an increase in violence leading up to the vote. At least nine people were wounded Tuesday in a bomb attack in southwestern Pakistan.
