I’m Not There is a new film directed by Todd Haynes , which ‘s been described as a movie about Bob Dylan, which is both very accurate and a little bit misleading. Tim’s approach is really meant to explore all of the conventions and clichés and explanations of the movie that tells the life story of * famous artist musician.
There is no actor in this movie named Bob Dylan, and instead there are 6 different characters played by different actors including Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, who incarnate very aspects of Dylan’s art, life and career.
There is Joan who is Cate Blanchett, playing Bob more or less as he appears in Haynes’s great documentary Don’t Look Back.
And then there is Heath Ledger playing a movie star who wants to play the character based on another character sort of like Bob Dylan, whose marriage to an artist played by ** ‘s fallen apart.
And what’s all added up to is not an interpretation of Bob Dylan’s life or explanation about his place in American culture. But I think a celebration of his spirit and also attempts to exam some of interesting problems and insides relating to American culture to celebrity, to pop music, and to the possibility to the movie making that the career of Bob raises. But I can’t say * I’m Not There how will appeal to those who have no interest whatsoever in Bob Dylan. I think that it’s visual techniques and an approach to story telling * kind of abstract * playful spirit may bring a lot of people in. But I don’t know since I grew up listening to Bob Dylan’s music and wondering what meant. This movie really immersed me in someone else’ obsession with Dylan, *. Such is an exhilarating experience. In fact, what you’re watching is very smart, very tricky and very clever artist that *, who has no match when it comes to cleverness, trickiness or mischievous intelligence.
