They point back to 2005 when US Airways bought America West. The two companies are now US Airways, but America West pilots are still operating under a separate contract.
这段举了一个以往的合并案例，说明没有free merger deals的合并的问题所在，合并后，公司的飞行员的协议还是按照原来合并前的公司的协议。我阅读了背景新闻，为什么飞行员不跟合并后新公司US Airways 签一个统一的协议呢？原来，美国航空业内部有个不成文的规定，飞行员的工资、补助和其他待遇和其资历有直接关系，基本上成正比，也就是类似我们的论资排辈。公司合并，两家老公司的飞行员在新公司的资历排名肯定被打乱了，飞行员肯定不答应，所以只有各自和各自原来的老公司签合同。

有个问题 VOA 2008-08-14第一段前半句President Bush has called on Russia to honor its commitment to a ceasefire in Georgia and withdraw its forces from that country. Speaking at the White House Wednesday, Mr. Bush said he's concerned about reports that Russia has not halted its military action as Moscow previously said it had.最后三个单词，听的时候听到it后面有一个v音，我想这里用完成时也说得过去，想请教一下大家......

关于20080815VOA其中有一个词组 The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose seven-tenths of a percent or 84 points, ending the day at 11617. 之中有一个　“seven-tenths of a percent” 是啥意思？ 直白的说是不是就是　0.7%?

正如ghance桐子所说，就是0.7%，新闻里很常见的。

我想这句话大概是“虽然战争明显变弱了，但战争的余灰（而非大的冲突）还在燃烧。”那么 “their”是指fighting吗？short在这里又是什么意思呢？but在这里是否定吧？

前面说的很清楚这个Georgia President 是男的，听他说话也是男的，那么这里的she和her就很有疑问，我听了好几次，觉得she应该是he，‘defend as’应该是“defense”。那么her指的就不是president，而是其它（可能是Georgia整个国家，因为称呼国家一般是用‘She她’。）

their 指的是战争的双方。 short 是说两方争端、冲突的时间短暂。but不是否定，是转折。

their short but brutal conflict:这次俄格冲突持续时间非常短，一个星期左右吧，但是却也是非常残忍的。（现在战争特点short but brutal）,their指俄格两国。

尽管战火逐渐平息，但这场短暂却残忍的冲突的余烬尚存。

defense没有动词形式，如果写成I want her to defense my president的话

我觉得她可能这里犯语法错误了，毕竟不是native speaker，这里应该是 I want her to defend my president, 她用了defense名词形式。

还有我查金山词霸defense 有动词形式啊，

defense  vt.  防守, 防卫, 谋划抵御。

 

不过not sure，因为现在手头没有好的词典，只能查金山。
