我想这句话大概是“虽然战争明显变弱了,但战争的余灰(而非大的冲突)还在燃烧。”那么 “their”是指fighting吗?short在这里又是什么意思呢?but在这里是否定吧?
their short but brutal conflict:这次俄格冲突持续时间非常短,一个星期左右吧,但是却也是非常残忍的。(现在战争特点short but brutal),their指俄格两国。
尽管战火逐渐平息,但这场短暂却残忍的冲突的余烬尚存。

前面说的很清楚这个Georgia President 是男的,听他说话也是男的,那么这里的she和her就很有疑问,我听了好几次,觉得she应该是he,‘defend as’应该是“defense”。那么her指的就不是president,而是其它(可能是Georgia整个国家,因为称呼国家一般是用‘She她’。)
我开头也是听成he的,后来被人误导了。今天重新听了一下,那个被采访的女子将ways的s音发的很重,因此听上去很象she,仔细听还是he,你是对的。
defense没有动词形式,如果写成I want her to defense my president的话
我觉得她可能这里犯语法错误了,毕竟不是native speaker,这里应该是 I want her to defend my president, 她用了defense名词形式。
