"if you will"几乎跟"you know"一样是个毫无意义的插入语
因为"含有更多果肉"比"含有更多干物质"容易明白得多，担心读者不解，遂加入meat的注释
可以理解成 if you know what I mean, 或者 if you call it like that(这里就是meat咯)

这句话是假设，不是应该用虚拟语气吗？any earlier,he would have risked being.............

貌似你是Desperate Housewives的粉丝。。。

1. 这句话应该是Economist杂志上的。手边没有语法书，但是在网上查到了几个同样的句子。这里的句型是Any earlier, and he...，注意这里多加了一个and。

    and有一条解释是：used to say that something is caused by something else [用于表示结果]
    e.g. I missed supper and I'm starving! 我没吃晚饭，所以现在饿极了！
          She fell downstairs and broke her leg. 她摔下了楼梯，摔断了腿。（From Longman）

    此处的and就应该是这个意思。而且此处的risk的意思是: to put sth in a situation in which it could be lost, destroyed, or harmed “使遭受（失去、毁坏或伤害）的危险”（From Longman）。也就是说，risk后面跟的sth/doing sth，只是“could”遭受某种危险，并没有实际发生，其实已经包含了虚拟语气的意思了。再用would have risked，是不是有点多此一举呢？

2. vast 和federal，都是修饰Brazil的，两个形容词修饰同一个名词，中间可以用逗号隔开。并不是national politicians in vast 和 federal Brazil并列，所以也就没有in vast这样的短语哈。
