The head of the Democratic Party of Japan said Mr. Muto's finance ministry experience would give the government too much influence over bank policy. The Democratic Party of Japan can block Mr. Muto's nomination because it controls the upper house of parliament. Both houses of parliament must approve the nomination.

 

[3] Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has called a meeting of the new National Assembly for next week. The president is asking assembly members to meet on March 17th.The meeting will put him face-to-face with members of Pakistan's future coalition government. On Sunday the Pakistan People's Party and Pakistan Muslim League announced plans to form a coalition. The two parties won the most assembly seats in general elections last month. The two parties say they will soon pass a measure to return power to judges whom Mr. Musharraf dismissed last year. The judges questioned the legality of his reelection as president while he was still Pakistan's army chief.

 

[4] Pakistani officials say at least 25 people were killed in two bomb attacks Tuesday in the eastern city of Lahore. Two hundred others were reported wounded. The first bomb destroyed the headquarters of the Federal Police Agency in Lahore. A short time later a suicide attacker caused his car to explode near a marketing agency several kilometers away. No one has claimed responsibility for the bombings.

He won the Democratic nominating event Saturday in the western state of Wyoming. Senator Obama is competing against Senator Hillary Clinton to be the party's candidate for president. Mississippi's Republican Party is also holding a primary election on Tuesday. Senator John McCain has won the number of delegates needed for the Republican nomination.
