US Vice President Dick Cheney says Hamas, with support from Iran and Syria, is trying to hinder peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis. Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem today, Cheney said there is evidence that Iran and Syria are supporting Hamas. He accused the two nations of doing everything they can to, in his words, "torpedo" the peace process. Cheney spoke after meeting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. The vice president is now in the Turkish capital of Ankara for the last stop of his nine-day regional tour.

The US military in Iraq says a roadside bomb has killed four US soldiers in southern Baghdad, pushing the American death toll in the five-year conflict to 4000. A military statement issued today said at least one coalition soldier was wounded in the bombing late Sunday. US Vice President Dick Cheney on a visit to Jerusalem today said the latest death toll may have a psychological effect on the public.

Voters in the tiny nation of Bhutan cast their ballots today in the country's first-ever national election. Thousands of people lined up at polling stations in the capital of Thimphu to vote, marking the nation's transformation from monarchy to a democracy. The two main parties vying for seats are both led by men close to the king, and have similar ideologies. Bhutan's Election Commission is expected to announce an unofficial tally of the votes on Monday night local time, with final election results released on Tuesday.

Pakistan's parliament is set to elect the nation's new prime minister today, more than a month after the defeat of President Pervez Musharraf's political allies in general elections. The party of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto nominated the former parliament speaker Yousaf Raza Gilani as its candidate for this post on Saturday. Mr. Musharraf has just sworn in the new prime minister on it Tuesday.

Authorities in Nigeria say an aircraft that went missing during a domestic flight more than a week ago has yet to be found. From Abuja, Gilbert da Costa reports.

The aircraft, a beechcraft twin turboprop, was on its way to Obudu tourist resort in Nigerian southeast, a remote mountain region. Owners of the plane, TATA operator with a vision company, said the aircraft was scheduled to have landed at its destination one hour after departure from Lagos, Nigeria's commercial city, but it had not been found since. It had three crew members on board when it went missing. The Nigerian aviation authorities say they scoured the mountainous terrain of Obudu for any sign of the missing aircraft, but found nothing. The failure of the authorities to find the plane has generated anger in Nigeria, which recorded a string of deadly plane crashes in the past few years. Despite promises to revamp the aviation sector, experts say technical and logistic deficiencies, particularly the lack of navigational aids and an ineffective search and rescue response, are compromising aviation safety in Nigeria. Gilbert da Costa for VOA News, Abuja.

Hong Kong Maritime officials say today that 18 missing Ukrainian sailors are feared dead after their tugboat collided with a cargo ship in local waters late on Saturday. Authorities said on Sunday that 7 people had been rescued but the others were missing. Officials had said the sailors could have found a pocket of air that would enable them to survive. But they said divers had knocked on the hull of the tug and got no response from inside.
