The first airplane carrying foreign aid arrived in Rangoon Tuesday from Thailand. Burmese officials now say the cyclone killed more than 22, 000 people. About 41, 000 people are reported missing. That number is expected to rise. The storm left hundreds of thousands of people without shelter. Many people are without food and drinking water.

 

[2] Chinese President Hu Jintao has arrived in Japan for a five-day goodwill visit. It is the first trip by a Chinese president to the country in ten years. Before leaving Beijing, Mr. Hu said he looked forward to a friendly atmosphere during his visit. He also said he believes the two nations can settle a dispute over oil drilling rights in the East China Sea. Mr. Hu and Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda are expected to discuss climate change, economic cooperation and other issues.

 

[3] The Tibetan government in exile says recent talks between its representatives and Chinese officials were a good first step. One of the Tibetan representatives Lodi Gyari described the talks as honest. He also confirmed that a second set of meetings would be held, but he did not say when or where the meetings would take place. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gong said the talks were only a beginning. He also blamed the Dalai Lama for the recent unrest in Tibet. The Tibetan spiritual leader has denied the claim.

 

[4] A suicide bomb attack in Pakistan has killed at least three people. Police officials say a man on a bicycle exploded his bomb after being stopped by police at a security position in the northwestern town of Bannu. A policeman was among the dead. The attack is the second since Pakistan's new coalition government began talks with militants led by Baitullah Mehsud. He is accused of plotting the murder of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Baitullah Mehsud has been linked to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. He declared a ceasefire during the talks. He has since said no peace agreement is possible until Pakistani troops withdraw from tribal areas near the Afghan border.

 

[5] Russian and the United States officials have signed a civilian nuclear agreement. American Ambassador William Burns and Russia's top nuclear officials signed the agreement Tuesday in Moscow. The signing came on the last day of the term of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The agreement will permit businesses from Russia and the United States to expand nuclear trade between their countries. Both the United States Congress and the Russian parliament must approve the agreement. Nuclear cooperation between the two countries has slowed in recent years because of disagreements over Iran's nuclear program.
