On Friday the United Nations Children's Fund said as many as one million Burmese children may be at risk of physical and emotional problems. An official for the UN agency in Thailand said that up to 40% of the storm's victims are children.

 

[2] Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived in Sichuan Province on Friday, four days after a powerful earthquake struck the area. The president immediately began visiting affected areas with China's Premier Wen Jiabao. Mr. Hu urged rescue teams to make every effort to find the tens of thousands of people who remain buried under the wreckage. Few of them are expected to still be alive. Chinese officials say more than 22, 000 people are known to have died as a result of the earthquake. Officials estimate that more than four million homes in Sichuan Province have collapsed or were destroyed.

 

[3] A South Korean official says the six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program are likely to begin again next month. Kim Sook is South Korea's chief negotiator at the talks. He spoke with news reporters in Seoul about his recent trip to China. The Chinese government has helped to organize the North Korean nuclear talks. Mr. Kim will travel to the United States on Sunday to meet with the American and Japanese nuclear negotiators.

 

[4] American Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez is urging South Korea to approve a new beef import agreement. He told news reporters in Seoul that the safety of American produced beef is, in his words, second to none in the world. Secretary Gutierrez met with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. The president asked for American government help in proving to South Koreans that American beef is safe. The South Korean government suspended American beef imports five years ago after a case of mad cow disease was found in the United States. Last year South Korea began importing American beef, but imports are restricted to boneless meat from cows 30-month-old or younger.

 

[5] A United States military court has found an American marine guilty of a sexually attacking a 14-year-old girl on the Japanese island of Okinawa. The court sentenced 38-year-old Staff Sergeant Tyrone Hadnott to four years in prison. The court cleared Hadnott of four other charges including rape of a child and kidnapping through trickery.

 

[6] A special group in Malaysia says it has found evidence of a plot to influence the appointment of judges. The group said three people were responsible for the plot. It said they are Malaysian lawyer V. K. Lingam, businessman Vincent Tan and former Cabinet Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor. The investigation resulted from a video tape recording. They chose Mr. Lingam discussing the appointment of judges during a telephone call. The group also said former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad was involved in the plot.
