The event, created by the World Wildlife Fund, asked volunteers to unplug for an hour as a symbolic gesture in support of conservation...

We are planning an event called "No Power For an Hour" and we are asking schools, globally, to turn out their lights and "unplug" for one hour

在freedictionary里还有解释:

unplug作为不及物动词的意思就是“to become uplugged”

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/unplug

Il Cielo è Sempre Piu Blù

HK

And finally "The Dumbest Generation". And if you're watching this webcast that apparently means you. At least that's the theory of a professor of English at Emory University, who has written a book which basically argue that Internet is making people stupid.
I'm Mark Bauerlein, professor of English at Emory University. And the book has a provoked title. It's 'The Dumbest Generation'. How the digital age stupefies young Americans and jeopardizes our future. Recent years I have began to look at youth culture, youth knowledge, youth academic achievement. And what has come up, more and more is the things don't look good. Young people today enjoy more and more digital connections, more screen time than ever before, and what effects are they are steadily disengaging from the traditional contents of the liberal arts.
One of the things we measured was how much people read literature and how much they read books. In general, and the first time we did study was in 1982, at that time young people form the most active reading group. When we did it again in 2002 they were the least active. Only about half of them ever read a book on their own. It's not a sign for school. It's not a sign in the workplace. They simply don't care.
The Internet is extraordinary. It is miraculous tool for knowledge and information. But the fact is that is not what the Internet means to the average 16-years-olds. What internet provides is a more intense form of contact with our 16-year-olds.
You know I often tell my students 'read more books, please read more books in your leisure time, and plug for just an or two hours per day'. I,I urge them ,and they, they generally just laugh at me. Some of them may feel I come down them too hard, but they know deep down that this is right.

to jason

eg. They tell me that you've agreed to it. 用一般现在时,强调现在的事实或结果。

所以偶觉得不太对,再仔细看了下语法书,现在时可以代替现在完成时。如,I understand(/have understood)what he wants.

所以这里也许的确是form,现在时。但是解释时,觉得解释为现在完成时更好俄,毕竟现在完成也有过去的意思嘛~~

The End~~

好栏目推荐之美国口语俚语

赐教不敢,  just my 2 cents:

其实只要稍微留意一下,会发现,其实普特的一些CLIPS 都有不少是夹杂了这种一般现在时表示过去的.

我发现,这些主要是属于一些历史现实.

而且很多的故事都是用一般现在时表过去.

刚才GOOGLE了一下,很巧地发现了一些更加有趣的例子,证明这种类似语法错误,就算大学英语老师也甚少谈及的现象:

The present tense used in the narration of events set in the past.

Our Living Language

When telling stories about past events, people often switch into present tense, as in I was walking home from work one day. All of a sudden this man comes up to me and says.... This phenomenon, called the historical present, has a long history in English and is found in numerous other languages, both ancient and modern. Linguists have sometimes suggested that historical present makes stories more vivid primarily by bringing past actions into the immediate present.

However, it has been noted that, no matter how exciting stories are, the speakers never use present tense verbs exclusivelyeven when relating the most crucial events.

In addition, past and present tense alternations tend to occur only between events that are markedly different. In other words, tense alternation usually does not occur when two verbs are viewed as belonging to one larger event. For example, two verbs joined by and that share the same subject tend to share the same tense as well, especially when the subject appears only once, just before the first verb, as in Those two people came in and sat down. It seems, then, that the historical present serves more to separate events within stories than to bring stories to life. One interesting exception to this is the verb say: its tense alternations do not seem regular; in addition, its third person present form says is also used in nonstandard narration with I, as in So I says to the guy, I says....

Il Cielo è Sempre Piu Blù

诚然,一般现在时表过去不只限于为数不多的动词,如hear, tell, say, forget. HISTORICAL PRESENT这种现象应该是一种相当地道的用法, 不是GENERAL GRAMMAR 可以解释得了的

Il Cielo è Sempre Piu Blù

其实,在这里更强调的是the active group was formed only in the past! 我觉得他要是用过去完成时,那还更能让人理解。但用现在时,真的想不出为什么。再看这里的上下文,

And the first time we did the study was in 1982, and at that time, young people formed the most active reading group. When we did it again in 2002, they were the least active. Only about half of them ever read a book on their own.

在用form之前,有一个明显的时间介词短语:at that time,而即使是02年的实验,他也用过去时表达。they were the least active.
