1. China says it has successfully reduced water levels in a lake created by the big earthquake last month in Sichuan province. The Xinhua News Agency says the province's top official made the announcement after waters began flowing from Tang Jiashan lake. The report said half of the water in the lake has been removed. Efforts to reduce water levels began on Saturday. Chinese troops used anti-tank weapons to explode rocks surrounding the lake. About 250,000 people were ordered to leave the area. More than one million others were threatened by flooding if the lake burst.

 

2. An American diplomat has arrived in North Korea. The American embassy in South Korea says *** crossed at the border village of ***. His visit is aimed at speeding up efforts by North Korea to disable its nuclear centers. Mr. *** is the State Department' top Korean expert. He is to return to South Korea on Wednesday before returning to Washington. 

 

3. Protestors gathered in South Korea' capital Tuesday in the biggest demonstration yet against the government. The protestors are angry about the government's decision to suspend a ban on beef imports from the United States. Reports say as many as hundreds of thousands of people took part in the demonstration. Tens of thousands of roit police and soldiers were deployed to control the crowd. Large shipping containers are being used to block streets around the official home of South Korea's president. Earlier Tuesday a government spokesman said Prime Minister *** and his cabinet offered to resign during a weekly cabinet meeting. It is not clear if South Korean president *** accepted the resignation.

 

4. President Bush says Iran faces international action if it does not halt its uranium enrichment program. The president spoke in Slovenia at his final meeting with European Union leaders. He warned of the dangers the world would face if Iran develops nuclear weapons. Mr. Bush said now is the time for all nations to work together to stop Iran's nuclear program. Mr. Bush thanked European Union countries for their support in Iraq and Afghanistan.

 

5. The rising cost of oil imports pushed America's trade deficit for April to its highest level in more than a year. The Commerce Department says the difference between American exports and imports was nearly 61 billion dollars for the month. That is nearly 8% more than the trade deficit for March. Late Monday American Central Bank chairman *** said the threat of inflation is growing. He also said the threat of a slowing economy renames ???, but it's easy. Investors consider his comments has a sign the Federal Reserve has ended a long series of interest rate cuts.
