The Edge of Heaven is a new film from FA, a German director of Tu D. He won the best screen writing award of the Kam film festival in 2007 and confirms that Akin is really one of the most interesting younger film makers working in Germany and maybe in Europe. And in some ways this is a movie about east meeting west, the characters are both Turkish, German and they travel back and forth between those 2 countries. But it's not a schemetic tale of immgration or of culture clash, it's really about individual destiny, it's about desire,about family life, about ambition, about class, about all these things, and how they work in the world where people move around a lot, where people encounter each other by accident, where globalization is both a governing abstraction and affective daily life. There're 3 stories that're told not quite in common logical order. It's sort of the style of narration that we got used to from Bible and Crash and movies like that. it's divided basically into 3 chapters. There're 3 sets of parents and children that are central to the story. I don't want to say too much really about the way that this story is introduced because one of the wonderful things about this movie is the sytle of the story telling. in some cases it gives the way write at the begining what's gonna happen, the two of the chapter titles announce the death of characters. So you know before you xxxxx,so you know something is going to happen, but you don't know quite how... There're a lot of surprises, there're a lot of overlaps, a lot of interesting patterns that megre this story gito. There's also a lot of vilences, a lot of bad feelings. This movie is about vilence gives to women, about the vilence that the state next on the citizens and about the vilence that the citizens give back to the state when they're frustrated by what's doing to them. And it has a very interesting tone of both engagement and touchment. That is Akin is watching on these people on what they do without judging them or without steering a symphthsis any particular direction. But the same time there's enormorous compassion and humanity even tenderness that merges in this movie even in its coolest and harshest moment. It really offers an interesting window on aspects of life in Europe and beyond Europe in the world today.

This is a movie about violence against women, about the violence that the state enacts on its citizens, about the violence that citizens give back to the state when they are frustrated by what is doing to them.

 

And it has a very interesting tone of both engagement and detachment. That is, Akin is watching all these people and what they do without judging them, or without steering our sympathies in any particular direction. But at the same time, there's an enormous compassion and humanity and even tenderness that emerges in this movie, even in its cruelest and harshest moments.
