Britain is vowing to press reaction against Zimbabwe one day after China and Russia vetoed the U.S. response resolution that wouldn’t impose UN sanctions against the African Union. The office of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that Mr. Brown will urge European Union action against President Robert Mugabe’s government. Mr. Brown is expected to discuss new EU measures with partners who gather for a Paris summit beginning Sunday. The prime minister’s author said Mr. Brown will propose travel bans on President Mugabe and action against companies owned by his allies. The United States in Britain criticized China and Russia for vetoing the proposed UN sanctions Friday.

 

The Arab League is organizing an emergency meeting at the request of / Sudanese leaders after reports of the International Criminal Court may seek the arrest of Sudan’s president as early as Monday. We hear more from Daryl Kilter.

 

“New names have been yet revealed, but there is growing speculation, Mrinay alkabo will seek the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for his role in war crimes.” The Arab League says it has received their quest from the Sudanese government to hold the meeting on the issue and has begun consulting foreign ministers from the member countries. On Friday, Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations, Abdalmahmood Abdalhaleem Mohamad, denounced the possibility of indictment against President Bashir . “This is a criminal move, that should be resisted by all peace-loving countries in the world.” Sudan has refused to hand over the two Sudanese citizens currently wanted by the ICC. /alicosha/ a leader of the government backed judge with militia , and humanitarian affairs minister *. Sudanese officials have indicated that the government will continue to reject the quests to turn over Indian-Sudanese citizens to the ICC. Some activists have welcomed the possibility of charges against president Bashir which will mark the first time the court has such charges against the sitting head of state. North Korea has pleged to finish disabling its biggest nuclear facility within months in exchange for fuel oil and other economic gain. The agreement was reached during six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program which concluded in Beijing, Saturday. After talks, the North also agree to allow inspectors from the six nations to visit the North’s nuclear facilities, review documents and interview technical personnel to make sure the program has been shut down. Experts from the United Nation’s International Atomic Energy Agency would also be allowed to monitor the process.

 

Iran has threatened to retaliate against Israel and 32 U.S. bases in the Middle East if there is an attack on the Iranian nuclear program.  Some at official Iranian news agency quoted the deputy for supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying Iran’s missiles could hit and destroy targets throughout the region. He spoke on the same day Iran dismissed speculation, it risks being attacked over its disputed nuclear program. Iranian state media quoted foreign minister as saying Israel and the United States do not have the capability to enter what he called ‘another crisis’.

 

 

 

French President Nicolas Sarkozy says Syria and Lebanon have agreed to open embassies in each other’s capitals. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with his counterpart Michel Suleiman Saturday in Paris. It was the first meeting since Mr. Suleiman was chosen to be president in May.  Relations between the two countries have been strained since the 2005 assassination of former Lebanon Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Many Hariri’s supporters blamed Syrian for the killing which was followed by mass demonstrations and international pressure that led to the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon. Syrian has denied any involvement in the assassination.

 

Pakistani security officials say suspected Taliban militants have killed at least fifteen soldiers in // in northwest in Pakistan. Officials say the militants attacked the soldiers’ convoy Saturday as it was heading towards the town of HG in northwest frontier province. The officials say the soldiers returned the fire killing at least three militants. The Taliban says only one of its fighters died. HG is in a volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The attack took place as the top U.S. military officer made an unexpected visit to Pakistan Saturday. And Afghan police are looking for other people involved in that blast.
