Britain is vowing to press reaction against Zimbabwe one day after China and Russia vetoed the U.S. response resolution that wouldn’t impose UN sanctions against the African Union. The office of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that Mr. Brown will urge European Union action against President Robert Mugabe’s government. Mr. Brown is expected to discuss new EU measures with partners who gather for a Paris summit beginning Sunday. The prime minister’s author said Mr. Brown will propose travel bans on President Mugabe and action against companies owned by his allies. The United States in Britain criticized China and Russia for vetoing the proposed UN sanctions Friday.

 

The Arab League is organizing an emergency meeting at the request of Sudanese leaders after reports of the International Criminal Court may seek the arrest of Sudan’s president as early as Monday. We hear more from Daryl Kilter.

 

“New names have been yet revealed, but there is growing speculation, Mrinay alkabo will seek the arrest of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir for his role in war crimes.” The Arab League says it has received their quest from the Sudanese government to hold the meeting on the issue and has begun consulting foreign ministers from the member countries. Ali Kushayb a leader of the government backed Janjaweed militia , and humanitarian affairs minister Ahmad Haroun. Sudanese officials have indicated that the government will continue to reject the quests to turn over AnyIndian-Sudanese citizens to the ICC. Some activists have welcomed the possibility of charges against president Bashir which will mark the first time the court has such charges against the sitting head of state. Pakistani security officials say suspected Taliban militants have killed at least fifteen soldiers in an ambush northwest in Pakistan. Officials say the militants attacked the soldiers’ convoy Saturday as it was heading towards the town of HG in northwest frontier province. The officials say the soldiers returned the fire killing at least three militants. The Taliban says only one of its fighters died. HG is in a volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The attack took place as the top U.S. military officer made an unexpected visit to Pakistan Saturday. And Afghan police are looking for other people involved in that blast.
