I'm Susan Clark with the Special English program, WORDS AND THEIR STORIES

Young Mr Smith had an idea for his employer.  It wasn't an idea for saving money for the company by increasing prices.

At the same time, Smith suggested that the company sell goods of less value. If his employer liked the idea, Smith might be given more pay. Perhaps he might even get a better job with the company.  Business had been very slow, so Mr Smith's employer thought a few minutes about the idea. But then she shocked her head. 'I'm sorry Smith' his employer said. 'It just will not wash'

Now, the meaning of these English words should be 'it will not get clean'. Yes, Smith's idea did  not have anything to do with making something clean. So why did his employer say 'It will not wash'?

Most word experts agree that It will not wash means It will not work. I R wrote that the saying probably developed  in Britatin in the 1800's. C B used it in the story published in 1842. She wrote 'that won't wash miss', mr B seems to have meant that the dye used to colors a piece of clothing  were not good. The colors could not be depended on to stay in the material.

In 19 centurial England, the expression came to mean undependable statement. It was used mainly to describe an idea. But sometimes it was used about a person. A critic once said of the poet Robert Browning  he won't wash. The critic did not mean the poet was not a clean person. He meant that Browning's points counld not be depended on to last.

Today, we know that judgement was wrong. Robert Browning is still considered a major poet. But very few people remember the man who said Browning would not wash.

Happily for the young employee Smith, his employer wanted him to do well in the company. So the employer talked 'Turkey' to him. She said 'your idea would be unfair to our buyers, think of anothe to save money. '

A century ago to talk Turkey meat to talk pleasantly. 'Turkeys' in b* were thought to be speaking pleasantly to one another. In recent year, the saying has come to mean on a tempt to teach something important.

Word experts Charles F tellls how he believes this change to take place. He says to man were shooting Turkey together. One of them was a white man , the other was American idean. The white begins stating reasons why he should get all the 'Turkeys' for themself. But the American idean stopped him. He told the white man 'now, I talk Turkey to you'

Mr Smith thought a better idea after his empolyer talked Turkey to him. He was  given an increas in pay. So if your idea will not wash, try talking Turkey to yourself and come up with a better idea.

I am Susan Clark with the special English progaram words and their stories. Young Mr Smith had an idea for his employer. it was an idea for saving money for the company by increases prices. and the same time , Smith suggested that the company sell goods of less value. if is employer likes his idea, Smith might giving more pay. perhaps, he might even get a better job in the company.
business had been very slow, so Mr Smith's employer thought a few minutes about the idea, but then she shook her head" i an sorry Smith, his employer said , it will just not wash. now the meaning of this english words should be "it will not get clean'. yet Smith's idea did not have anything to do with making something clean. so why his employer say:"it will not wash". most words experts agree that it will not wash means it will not work.

Eric Popo wrote the same probably developed in Britain in the 1800s. Shalong Preety used it in a story published in 1849. she wrote:"that wouldn't wash, Miss". Ms Branty seems to have meant that the dyes used to colour a piece of close, were not good . the colour could not depended  on to stay in the material. in 1900 century england, the expresson came to mean an undependable staement. it was used mainly to describe an idea. but some times used to a person. a critic once said " Poet Rubbert Brony, he won't wash, the claim doen't not mean the poet was not a clean person, he meant Brony's poems could not depended on to last.

today we know the judgement was wrong, Rubbert Brony still is considered a major poet. but very people remember the man said Brony would not wash.
Happly for employee Smith, his employer wanted him to do well in the

company, so the employer talked turkey to him, she said you idea would  be unfair to our buyers, think of another way to save money".

a century ago, to talk turkey means to talk pleasantly, trukeys in the * was thought to be speak pleasantly to one and another. in recent years, the saying has mean an attempt to teach something important, words expert * tells he believes this change took place : he said two men shooting turkeys together. one of them is a wite man, the another was a American indian, the white man began to stating reasons why he should get turkeys for himself. but the American indian stoped him. he told the white man, i talk turkey to you, Mr Smith thought a better idea after his employer talked to him. he was giving increasing in pay.

so if your idea will not wash, try talking turkey to yourselfand come up with the better idea.
