Today’s world pan take us back to the days of gold rush in California. On January 24th , 1848. a man named Jane Willson Masch discovered gold in the territory of California. The news spread quickly. Thousands rushed west, they traveled on foot by horseback and by boat to reach the gold fields. By 1849, the great gold rush was on. Towns and cities grow overnight, through out the territory, in the mountains along the streams and rivers, thousands of people search for gold, they had food to eat and blankets to cover them. They also had news to read and picks and pans to search for gold. Some found areas of mountain rock seeked with gold, these man got rich. But such areas were few, and quickly cleared by the first man to find them. Others search for gold in the rivers coming down the mountains. They were after pieces of gold that the rain that washed down from above. The only way to find discover gold was by penny. First, a gold minner put dirt in the middle pan and added water. That they shook the pan so that the water would wash the dirt. Slowly, he put the water out of the pan, if you are lucky miner, pieces of gold would remain. Across the nation, newspapers carriage the stories of gold being found. One told how thousands of people climbing the mountains looking for gold, some stories told how others follow the rivers and streams with pans. Each one hope that the place planed paned out well had some gold. For many gold mining did not pan out, for a few it paned out well. But in time huge machines were built that could wash many tones of dirt at a time, panning died out.

The world, however, remained in the language. Today Americans still say “it paned well.” When something they have down pleased them. A business, a discovery, a simply event pans out well if you did successful. Unhappily sometimes things do not pan out. In recent years, the world paned take on another meaning. Today it also means to criticize. How it got this meaning is hard to discover .but the job of critic is sometimes pan the world the writer artists or singers. Sometimes critics made pan on movie or play so severely that no one will go to see it. There are times, however, when the play became highly successful even though most of the critics panned without mercy. The pans should have washed out of the play. But as actors have put it out, sometimes a critic’s pan turns of gold.
