Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in France where she is call on Russia to honor French mediated ceasefire with the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. She is then going to Georgia to show her support to the in-battled leader there. NPR’s Michele Kelemen has more.

 

A State Department spokesman says there have been confusing reports from the ground of Georgia. And in echo Rice’s call on Russia to hold on military operations and let US aid flow in. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says much of the world is looking at Russia through different lands.

 

“If Russia didn’t step back from its aggressive posture and actions in Georgia, the US-Russia relationship could be adversely affected for years to come.”

 

Gates says he is no need to use US military force however saying his mention is humanitarian one to bring in release supplies and help Georgia recover. He said so far US military experts have found the main port of Poti in * and key supplies road open. Michele Kelemen NPR News Washington.

 

The Federal Aviation Administration is accusing Fort Worth-based American airline of safety and drug testing violations. The FAA says American return two aircrafts in the service after pilots report safety problems. Government says two of the airlines’ MB-83 jets were flowing 58 times in violation of federal safety regulations. Government also cited the nation’s largest airline for efficiency in the drug and alcohol test programs. The FAA says it is seeking for more than seven million dollars in penalty against the American.

 

Major concession for former Democratic Presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton has now been confirmed Clinton’s name will be placed nomination along with nominator * Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Move by large symbolic is expected to help unit the Party fractured by the baisc primary.

 

Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan Chase became a latest big bank to sell buy-back auction rate securities to their customers. Regulars say the bank misled the customers by risky security. NPR’s Jim Zarroli reports.

 

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said the bank sold auction rate securities to individuals, investors, charities, and small businesses even the market for the product has dried up. “These people who believe they were buying a short term security, it’s a cash equivalent just like cash, and for six months, they have been locked in the nightmare where they can’t get their money back.” Auction rate securities are dead products with interests that reset regularly. Cuomo also says that J.P. Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley had agreed to buy back seven million dollars worth the securities between them. They agreed to the settlement without any wrong doing. City Group and UBS have already agreed to similar settlements. Jim Zarroli NPR News, New York.

 

On Wall Street the Don Jones Industrial Average climbed 82 points today end the session at 11,615. The NASDAQ gained 25 points. The Standard Pool 500 loses up 7 points today. This is NPR.

 

Police in Iraq says at least eighteen people are dead and dozens of others are wounded after a female suicide bomber detonated an explosive device near a group of * *. The blast south of Baghdad today was the deadliest one of the authorities said has been one of the serious attack into travelers heading to the holy city of * for a major religious festival. Witness says the woman blow herself near the group that was resting by the side of the road.

 

In rare order Federal * Court in New York will reconsider the case of Canadian rendition victim Maher Arar. Arar is an engineer who says he has tortured after been mistaken for terrorist. His law suit was dismissed two months ago. NPR’s Margot Adler reports.

 

Arar who was born in Syria was detained in 2002 while returning to Canada after a vacation. Federal Authority says he was wrongly indentified as a member of *. The Canadian government agreed to pay him ten million dollars for passing bad information to US authorities. The US send Arar to Syria and he was claiming in interviews in law suit where he was tortured there. A law suit that was * that Senator Constitutional rise in 2004, a three judges panel dismissed the law suit in June saying allowing it to proceed would harm national security and interfere with US * relations. But now lawyers have been notified that the * * appeals about a dozen judges will rehear the case. Margot Adler NPR News, New York.

 

Another sign of downturn in the US housing market may have further to go, but national association of * says house prices fall more than three quarters of US city during a second three months this year.
